Noctua NH D14 causing some problems

Go to solution Solved by Colin1337,

Well, I mounted the cpu cooler a little differently. Not as efficient the way I have it (blowing air out the top of the case/sucking air down from the GPU) but so far the computer has been fine. Not a single issue, still able to OC my cpu to 4.7 without cracking 75* C.  I'm planning on upgrading to a 980 here soon, so  hopefully the heat from the GPU will be less of an issue after that.

Alright bear with me guys, I'm going to try and explain in detail this issue I'm having.
So, I recently upgraded my system because my h100i killed my last CPU. Installed a new mobo and cpu (I will post a full parts list at the end of this) Everything was working perfectly. Decided I wanted to overclock my cpu again, so I went ahead and purchased the Noctua NH-D14. Got it a few days later, not a single problem in the mean time. Went ahead and installed it, everything seems to work great. A day goes by, I go to power my PC on, it kicks on for about 3 seconds the powers off, then goes ahead and powers itself back on and off again. It does this probably 4 times before I had a chance to flip the switch on my PSU.

So at this point I'm thinking, "great, I probably had a loose wire or I didn't seat something properly and I just shorted my system."  I pop it open, remove the GPU and reseat it thinking this may be the problem. Go to power it back on, it stays on "Sweet!" but the monitor has no signal and my keyboard wont power on. I check the mobo and see I'm getting a code 55. "Ok, strange...." I lay the PC down on its side, Wiggle the Noctua around a bit to see if it's maybe not seated properly, check to make sure it isn't hitting my ram, while its on its side, I go to turn it back on. Everything works, it boots up into windows no problems. I go to lift the PC and put it upright, it powers down.

I turn it back on, its giving me a code 55 again, I tap the top of my case with my hand, PC powers off then goes to boot itself back up and does this 1 more time on its own before I killed it. So at this point I go to take everything apart. I remove the GPU, remove the Noctua, but before I remove anything else, I turn the computer on with the Noctua off, it boots up fine, I stand it upright, still fine. I tap on it, kinda lean it side to side, still running like a champ. "So its the cpu cooler, ok weird but maybe if I install it and reseat it carefully it'll be good?"  So I re-install it, everything seems to be going fine. An hour later the PC kicks off and goes into its endless reboot cycle. I'm about to pull my hair out at this point. I gently wiggle the Noctua unit, turn the computer back on, it works, great! Just to double check, I tap the case again, powers off.

So here I am, 2 hours later, with my case laying on its side as this is the only way I can get it to work without kicking me off and powering down and into its endless power cycle.

Long story short; upgraded PC, everything worked great. Installed Noctua NH-D14, computer turns itself off and enters endless power cycle or gives me a code 55, will only work properly when laying on its side.

Is the Noctua Fan plugged into the CPU FAN header?

It is indeed.

Your memory is probably not seated correctly, which is what Code 55 is for that motherboard - also explains why the system randomly shuts off.

I've removed and resat the memory, and it wasn't doing this prior to the Noctua install.

Can you take a picture of how your cooler is installed? I have the D14 myself and have recently tried a different orientation for it - never had an issue like you're having.

EDIT: Actually, take pictures from all angles that you can.

Waaaaaiiit a minute.

So from what i read you said that basicaly whenever you have the Noctual D14 cooler mounted on whenever the PC stand | | it doesnt boot and gives a code 55?

When your system is in = position it turns on but when you tap it it goes off ,right?

Something tingles me.Infact if the code 55 is a RAM error code i think that the D14 cooler might have somekind of aditional presure to the RAM DIMM itself which makes it go wonky.

Place your PC in the standart position | | and hold the cooler with your hand lifting it abit and try to turn it on and see if it helps.IF this works you might have to buy lower profile ram

Its probably the weight of the NH-D14 pulling on the mobo thats causing the issue... hence no problem when sitting on the side.
