Go to solution Solved by Guest,

yep. all them are configured correctly. 1600 mhgz all 4 slots are filled up.

Restart your computer and go into the BIOS.

Check to see how much RAM is recognised, and ensure the RAM frequency is set to 1666Mhz.

so i got windows 7 ultimate x32 bit. i know you can upgrade by putting in a x64 bit disc but i have a full version windows. i have 16 gb of ram but only can use 4 gb...

Just so you know 32 bit is X86 and 64bit is x64.

Do you have a 64Bit CPU?

He has 16GB of RAM. As far as I know, there is no platform that will support that much RAM and still have a 32-bit CPU. LGA775 might, but I highly doubt it.

That's certainty 64bit.

Is the RAM installed in the correct configuration?

Assuming you have 4 Sticks, are they all the same, or are the brands and/or are the frequencies different.

get 64bit.

32 bit systems dont understand the more memory than 4gb, so you will be wasting 12gb of your ram, and since you bought 16gb i dont think you want to waste 3/4th of it, so format the drive and install 64bit os

ASUS P5Q Turbo (only 2GB sticks seem to exist however :( ).

OP: Yes the i5 4440 is 64bit, I'm using one right now with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

That certainly seems like 64 bit capable to me. If you have an official key (7 x86 ultimate seems a VERY odd combination for a legit key to me, reasoning being ultimate = full features for professionals, 32 bit = low powered, older machine that may have trouble with some features = very unusual combination) your key is still valid for the x64 bit version. Microsoft does not care whether you install a x86 or x64 (meaning 32 or 64 bit). You can download the official 64 bit iso of your choice from microsoft directly here. It should give you the option for 64 bit or 32 bit.

If you do not belive us and want to test it for yourself (fair enough, we're just some dudes on the internet) burn yourself a live DVD (or Stick) with any 64 bit Linux on it and check for the amount of memory it says it has. Ubuntu or Kubuntu have a nice system settings tool that should give you the required info.

To actually answer your question, no you cannot upgrade from X86 to X64, its not possible (at least not officially anyway). You must do a full reinstall.

I believe there is a hacky way of doing the upgrade from X86 to X64 but if it was my computer I certainly wouldn't risk OS integrity by using some hacky upgrade method to achieve a job which should never be attempted.
