Hello there, so today I spent my Valentine's day at my local Micro Center. They held a clinic in the technical room. It was a small room, good enough to fit at least 15-20 people. I walked in and there were 5 men in there who looked as if in their late 50s. The instructor had powerpoint slides about the basics of building a PC. He stated, "You do not build a PC because it is cheaper. You either build it as a hobby or for it to be unique." He also explained to us the differences between an HDD and an SSD. He obviously recommended us an SSD. After, he began to talk about the 2 CPU companies, AMD and Intel. He said that AMD is an excellent CPU to start off with but Intel is obviously the greatest. He explained to us how motherboards have ditched the DDR2 slots, IDE ports and PowerSupplies that now don't really use molex. Since had learned most of my PC related things online, I already knew most of the things explained. ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) was also mentioned and we were taught how to prevent it. The instructor said that using an AntiStatic wrist strap is something you should consider before you build. We were also lectured about what was needed back then for a basic build and what Business, Student, and Gaming builds now utilize. After the PowerPoint, there was a cart that had a PC on it (not a shopping one but one where you could place things on the top and center of it, mostly for projectors). The PC was an old basic build, it featured a Pentium, 6gbs of Ram, a Sata type HDD, stock fan, thermaltake 300w Power supply and a basic motherboard. Our instructor opened up the case from both sides and showed us the inside, how to insert and unscrew the motherboard, the Power Supply connections and cable management. He did a decent job on showing us everything. In the end he let one guy take out and put the ram back in, take out and insert the CPU and place the motherboard back in the case. Overall it lasted 2 hours but I believe that it would be worth it for someone new in the process of building their own PC. We also got some hand outs with some good information before building and troubleshooting. I would rate this event a 7/10

Nice. Sounds like you enjoyed it.

Small class, but at least you got to get a hands on kind of feel before building.

I have never used an anti static wrist strap, but sue it's a good idea. Haha

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Cheers

I bought a wrist strap right after.

Better safe than sorry I suppose. I have had my PC for about 3 years and conduct weekly maintenance without a wrist strap and have yet to encounter a problem.

I guess one day I will learn my lesson though. Haha

Haha, well it actually helps, just old hardware.

Glad you had fun. Do you feel confident in building now? I remember from your other thread, I think you said you were starting a build.

I have it in the garage.

If you have seen the movie Interstellar, dust builds up in this garage like it does in that movie. Haha
