Hello guys,

I will ask this here, maybe I am luckier than in the Asus forum

I have a Sabertooth x79 mobo with an i7-3930k cpu (Stepping C2, which should have a working implementation of vt-d)

Whenever I enable Hyper-v, the computer is no longer able to wake up from sleep or hibernation (fans start, but monitors stay black. Windows never regains control). Disabling Hyper-v solves the problem.

I have read this is a common problem for some Gigabyte motherboards, but I did not find any info regarding this MB.

Is there anyone in the forum with this Mobo? Could you please confirm me if Hyper-v works for you?

Also, I could consider purchase another Motherboard. The following ones are still available close to my home:

Asrock x79 Extreme 6

Asus Rampage IV Black Edition

GA-x70-UP4 (Refurbished and Gigabyte is not precisely know for good compatibility with Hyper-v)

Can anyone please confirm if Hyper-v works fine on this motherboards (specially the Asrock, the Rampage is quite expensive and I have a legacy PCI card)

Also, as I know you will probably suggest ideas to test my current motherboard (which are welcome):

Bios is up to date

I have disabled almost all devices (Storage controllers, USB3, ieee1394...)

I have disabled vt-d and leave only vt-x (Just in case, although I am 100% positive I have a SR0KY (Step. C2) cpu, I waited for the C2 revision and select the cpu myself)

Tried W8, W8.1 and W10TP

Thank you all

Yeah, the thing about the Rampage IV:

Honestly, the Rampage is a great mobo, but is has plenty of things I do not need

- I use a single PCIe card

- I do not overclock, nor I have the need to

- I do have an independent sound card

We are talking about paying a 250€ premium price for features I honestly don't care about. The sabertooth x79 is already a premium Motherboard with way more features than I really need. Buying an even more expensive motherboard from the same vendor hoping I don't find the same problem without confirmation is not really appealing

Yes, that one will be cheaper, but the idea is, if someone can confirm me the problem I have is caused by my MB, I would purchase another MB if someone can confirm me one that does work with Hyper-V. Besides, that one, sadly, has a 1150 socket, I will need one with 2011 socket

  • 1 month later...

The problem is probably due to the power management settings (sleep states) in the firmware of your main board.

you might want to play around with the S1 or S3 sleep state settings.

Sorry, I cannot check this as I play around with Virtual box and VMware and never had this problem.

(tested on X79 Sabertooth + i7-4960x config)

PS: your CPU supports all the needed virtualization - VT-x, VT-d and VT-x w/ EPT

I found the issue two days ago. It won't happen if I disconnect the Sound Card (Asus D2X) Tested it by connecting and disconnecting the sound card, and the behavior is consistent. I tried with the official drivers (the ones I had installed before) and some unofficial ones (Unixonar), problem still there :(

Anyway, at least now I know why. Thank you guys for your help
