Should I OverClock? (AMD)

Hello there, I am in doubt about purchasing a Hyper 212 Evo. All I have left to purchase is my HDD and PSU. Cpu fan if necessary. I honestly didn't know in what section I should post this on as it has to do with my CPU, an FX 6300 that is overclockable. I am really considering on getting the Hyper 212 Evo but I don't know if I really need it. About how many more FPS or performance would I get if I pair it with an R9 270 and overclock both the CPU and GPU? I was considering using the stock cooler but I have heard that it is pretty loud but it still does its job. Will the 212 Evo make a drastic difference then the stock cooler from AMD? I plan to play at night and keep my pc running as quiet as it can while performing a great job on cooling.

Of course that cpu should be overclocked but use an aftermarket HSF.  In regards to overclocking that cpu I had no issues getting my son's to 4.5 GHz stable.  There is a great guide on LTT.  Here is the link ....

If you are nervous about overclocking make sure you take note of all the settings in regards to overclocking in the BIOS.  Heck I wrote down all the settings I had at various times for working settings.  I made notes on various overclocks.  Put in the extra work and good things happen.

this because some do not have adiquit vrm cooling but even if you werent oc'ing i would still get the cooler just toadd to the longevity of the chip

You can get at least 4.3GHZ on that board.

Yes but most games these days are more GPU related.  Still getting a free boost in performance for not only games should be something you take advantage of.  Seriously if you follow that guide you will do fine.

yeah you can overclock on it jsut dont push it too hard (will explain what that is in a sec)

in multi threaded games such as battlefeild and crysis...no because the gpu is the limit (as it should be, you paid for it to work right?)

in older single threaded games that max out 1 thread you'll get an equal performance boost the the overclock, 10%oc=10%more fps, though those games are usualyl dead easy to run and get 100fps anyway though sometimes theres one that doesnt or is just badly made.

what i would do is set voltage in bios to 1.4, 0% loadline (or normal) and just bump the multiplier up .5 at a time until it fails 1 hour of amd overdrive or crashes.

chances are you can start at 4ghx (20x) and might end up around 4.4ish

biggest benefit you'll see is in transcoding files in freemake etc or running cinebench (do that as a test also)

edit-you could go further with more voltage but stress on the vrms from power draw increases exponentially as frequency x volts, you're drawing more power through it faster and faster...

but id say 1.4 is a good safe start and 4ghz too, monitor voltage in cpuz and notice the voltage idle at desktop and then run cinebench and see how much it "droops", loadline calibration can be used to combat this by adding voltage as more droop happens (as frequencys rise) try and keep it set to what you set it in bios.

I do this because the stock cooler is sometime loud.

Put the ram at stock speeds... overclock only one thing
I run my fx 6300 4.2ghz with 1.356v

Voltages that normaly fx6300 uses:

4.2: 1.33-35
4.4: 1.37-38
4.5:1.40-42
4.6:1.42-45
4.8:1.47+

Id say do it, stock coolers are for intel boys

at low fan speeds its near silent and the cooling capacity (about 180w) is far beyond what your 6300 will need (on that board atleast) so it should run nice and cool.

edit-fwiw im running an 8120 while my 8320 is on RMA (5ghz ) and at 1.4v at 4.2ghz im just trying my evo out instead of my AiO and im impressed.

yeah its super easy, if you've ever seen a split pea....you want that much maybe a tad under dead center so it spreads out to about the size of a dime once the heatsink is on.

im a bit of a perfectionist so will do it 2 or 3 times till i get what i think is the right amount, also ive used various pastes, super thick ones thicker than toothpaste some so thin theyre like water, silicon based, diamond based, silver based...

so long as it spreads thin (but doesnt over flow over the edges) you're usually good, (not too little, you want it to cover maybe 75% of the IHS but dont spread it!) the only one i dont like is "white thermal grease" its not the best conductor and its a pain to clean off your hands.

fwiw just ran cinebench for you on an overclocked fx8 bulldozer with hyper 212evo in my 22*c room.

get it full sized open in new tab and download it.

I don't really understand benchmarks..

They're the equivilant of a dyno run with cars.

they are a fixed standard in which you can measure performance and therefore performance increase/decrease, cinebench will run and max out your cpu and give you a number of points at the end, a 10% overclock might net you 18% more performance.

I just use cinebench as an early way to see if in overclock is stable, if t passes that THEN ill test it for an hour in amd overdrive stress test.
