I'm doing a science Fair project and am looking for information regarding what makes a better fan, one airflow optimized or two pressure optimized?

thats depends on what the fan is being used for.

thats depends on what the fan is being used for.

To elaborate:

It depends on where you put it.

If the fan is going on a radiator, which offers resistance, a Pressure optimized fan is key.

Otherwise, for intake/exhaust of a case, Air Flow is where you want it.

The projects never end in my line of work.

a vague question gets a vague answer. especially when you have multiple threads on the same subject

I didn't see any of that, fair enough.

To understand this let me make an analogy. You want the air to move as fast as possible, obviously, and you have two scenarios. In one the air flows without any restriction, in the other you are pushing it through a dense fin array which does present some resistance to the air. In the same way, say you want to go as fast as possible with your car. One section is nice and flat so you can use a high gear to let the car go to top speed. Now say you'd want to go up a steep hill as fast as you can. If you used top gear the engine wouldn't have enough torque to keep the car going and you'd slow down and stall, whereas with a lower gear you don't reach the top speed the car would have been capable of on a flat surface, but you can keep going when the going gets tough. Static pressure fans are like that: the blades are angled less steeply and they move less air per revolution than airflow optimized fans in an unrestricted environment, but the more gentle angle of attack makes the airflow less eager to stall when there's stuff in the way so they can exert more pressure to blow the air past the obstacle.

So each type has a purpose. Airflow fans are usually used to ventilate the case with nothing in front of or behind them. To push air through radiators or heatsinks, static pressure optimised fans are more suitable.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.
