X1400 AMD graphic card and Ubuntu

Trying to playing counterstrike but I keep getting the Open GL error.  Does anyone know if my card supports it>?  If yes can someone send me the code :)

Seeing as you are on an old AMD GPU you will be using the open source drivers. This should be solved quite easily. Open up the terminal, yes the terminal, and run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-driverssudo apt-get upgradesudo apt dist-upgrade

This will add a PPA that will provide you with the latest open-source drivers for your system.

why did you say "yes the terminal"? It's arguably easier to use the terminal than to go through the GUI for almost all system tasks.

Some people, for some reason, freak out the moment you mention the terminal.

LOL yeah I can see that being a thing.  I know people who are afraid of doing their own Arch install.  I always tell them that Gentoo is way harder xD

I am not near the laptop right now but I remember it has gallium installed. I will try the code tonight. I love the terminal btw :)

note that you will need the legacy driver for a card that old. you may have to use the open source drivers because newer versions of Xserver are unsupported by older drivers.

Ubuntu is 64bit on my machine.  Its wierd tbecause I can run CS source and dota smoothly when I had it in Win 7

Can you try another Source game.

Source games use a D3D to OpenGL transition layer that means OpenGL requires a certain set of extensions that older cards don't support.

It seems that cards prior to HD series AMD and 8000 series nVidia do not support said extensions.

 

There is a whole thread here (steamforums) that are having the problem with TF2. there are mentions in other pages of comment to many different source games and graphics cards having the same issue.

 

Windows supports direct X so the cards will run it natively without a transition layer on windows.
