Hi Guys,

I'm at my wits end at this point - I just bought 3 new monitors to replace my ageing ones. I shut everything down, unplugged everything and plugged in the new stuff..... and nothing happened. The power button did nothing at all, not a single fan span up, not a single beep was heard - absolute silence. I quadruple checked that it was actually plugged in and the PSU was actually switched on - still nothing.

Hauled the PC out, unplugged everything from it, tried again. Unplugged everything internally except the CPU - still nothing. Shorted the PSU (Green to black) to test if it was the power - heres something interesting. Left the CPU plugged in, nothing happened, the fan didn't spin up and there were no beeps or lights on the motherboard. However, I'd accidentally left my HDD plugged in - which spun up.

I don't have access to a multimeter to test the PSU further, but short of that, is there anything anyone else can think of that I can test? Surely a motherboard can't suddenly die from the presence of new monitors.... can it?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Let me make sure I have this straight. You bought three new displays, connected them, the system wouldn't turn on, but even after disconnecting them, it still won't turn on?

Then it's a problem with your system, not your monitors.

I wouldn't agree.

I think the additional power of the monitors took out his houses electrical system :D

It wouldn't necessarily have taken the system out.. BUT if they were all on one outlet, he could have easily tripped a breaker.

I suggest going to check your circuit breakers (probably in the garage) and see if one did switch off.

Looks like I didn't really explain clearly - it didn't turn on when the new monitors were plugged in. However, everything else plugged into the same powerboard worked fine. I know it's not an electrical problem with my house wiring :P

In any case, I've replaced the PSU, mobo and CPU to be safe (I use this computer for work purposes) - didn't want to get a new mobo to plug a potentially dodgy PSU into it or vice versa. Didn't really want to upgrade the CPU at the same time, but it was really difficult to find a socket 1155 mobo :P

Not sure what I'm going to do with the (possibly dead?) parts now... Anyone wanna buy a motherboard with cpu? :D
