My LG BH14NS40 bluray writer drive (which is running in a Vantec Nexstar DX External 5.25in enclosure) has stopped reading dvds and cds, although it still reads blurays. I think the problem started when I was ripping a dvd using MakeMKV and it failed. I have already tried updating the firmware for the drive.

Any help would be welcomed. Thank You

The lasers for reading DVDs and CDs may have died. (they use two different lasers) Can you burn DVDs or CDs?

More than likely the laser has died. It will start to spin and then stop when it realises that it cannot read it. Unless you still use DVDs for something, I recommend just getting rid of it and not buying a new one. CDs are not going to be around for much longer because they are being replaced by digital downloads.
