So, with tax season coming up, it's time to build my mom a new office pc. And I'm wondering how good this will be.

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258

Mobo: Asus H97M-E/CSA LGA 1150

PSU: SeaSonic SSP-450RT 450W 80+ gold

Memory: Adata (2x4) 1600 DDR3

I plan on reusing the case of her current computer, Not sure if I can reuse the power supply in it. Will also be reusing the HDD in it now.

Just wondering if this would out-perform her I3, not sure about the I3's specifics, but windows lists it as an Intel Core I3 550 @ 3.20.

Or would I get more for my money to just wipe her HDD, and install a new, bloatware free version of Windows 7?

Just want something that blows her current computer out of the water.

Edit: Not sure what to get for a cpu cooler. Not sure what would fit in the case.

would it not be best to get a new i3? to get better multi task performance?

Not sure. All she really does is data entry

Maybe an apu could do the job a bit better?

I don't really like APU's, had an FM2 one and it wasn't very good.

h97 mobo is OP for an office build, just get the lowest end card possible and a h81 mobo.

Or get an i3.

The issue here, is that she's the type of computer user that will have 10^100000000000000000000000000000000000000 tabs, programs, and windows open just because she forgets to close them, and I want something that will handle that no problem. I was considering an I5-4460, but I'm not sure whether or not that would be worthwhile

That will be super overkill.

My i3 runs 9999999^99292929393 tabs opened with no problems.

That will be more up to ram.

Quite a few tabs, my mother odes this too, must be a mother thing :P

Lol, anyhow, i'v never seen cpu comparisons for these kinds of tests. I'm a little out of my league, here so that is all i think i can safely suggest.

An i5 would be nice, a good bit more expensive compared to an Oc'd pentium k. any how, following this thread.

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?

Would I get that out of her I3 by wiping the HDD, and re-installing a fresh windows install. It's an HP so bloatware out the ass.

Your problem is that her i3 is a firstgen i3.

I have haswell.

Get her a haswell i3 , it has integrated .

Which one do you have? I'm looking at the 4330 since it has slightly better onboard graphics (HD 4600 instead of 4400)

ahhh customer reviews.

Hmm?

It does .

Kinda shitty that a 2 core I3 gets hyperthreading, but no I5 has it.

The Pentium G3258 is not likely going to out perform a hyperthreaded i3 in a business environment unless an extremely good overclock is achieved.

I suspect that simply adding a good ssd and perhaps more memory to her current system would be enough to boost performance significantly. But list her current specs, I am sure someone can suggest some decent options.

HP PRO 3130 Micro-tower PC

Intel Core I3 550 (@3.20)

4gb RAMM

That's all I know about it. I know that it has a 1tb HDD. The motherboard has no manufacturer name on it that I can see.

From the benchmarks I have seen a G3258 would likely outperform the i3-550.

System specs for the HP Pro 3130 can be found at http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04290878. Parts list with pictures are at http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=4215773&docId=emr_na-c02207702&docLocale=en_US.

You might be able to re-use the memory, hdd, case, and psu (depending on motherboard power requirements).  The H97M-E requires an 8-pin ATX 12V power connection, the psu may not have one. A motherboard like the Asrock H97M-Anniversary only requires a 4-pin 12V power connection which matches the existing motherboard.

Including an ssd in the build will improve performance remarkably.
