Hi everyone here is my first post on the forum,  if it is on the wrong section I apologize.

I have been following linusTechTips for a while now, I am a programmer and since I started doing parallel programming both CPU and GPU i got more and more attracted from the hardware side of thing, so I decided to try to make my own build, just for fun and as a learning experience.

For those very reason this build was thought with  in mind the following points:

- I don't plan on using this pc, not gaming or work, i have my own system already, this is just a learning experience

- cheap, using old parts and if possible get them out of ebay

- able to be over-clocked

- in the future I plan to add a water cool system ( when I will start the OC).

So with this requirements I started doing my homework at best of my abilities and those are the components I came up with,

I would love to have a feedback on it to see I did not overlook something.

CPU:           Pentium G3258 K anniversary edition

GPU: gtx 260 SLI (or if easier to find gtx 460 SLI)

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI LGA

RAM:          Corsair 1333 dual channel 2x2GB

PSU:           Corsair AX750 750W

CASE: Phanteks Enthoo Pro

Now a small explanation on why I decided for those pieces,

CPU: this pentium looks like one of the cheapest option for OC and can provide quite a bit of fun in doing it. The LGA 1150 socket is compatible with the mobo
GPU: I need cheap components, and I saw I can easily find those out of ebay, I chosed SLI just because they are cheap so I can throw in another one easily

MOBO: the mother board needs to have OC capabilietes, and also support SLI, that should be able to provide so

RAM: just cheap small ram

PSU: 53W for the CPU,

         182*2W of the GPUS

45W for the mobo (I am not sure at all about the consumption of the mobo, I could not find that on the spec) plus

20-30~ W for disk and case fans

I get a 500W ~ for the total consumption plus a 40% of head room for PSU efficiency  and OC i get a ~700W required.

Now one thing I am not sure about  is that nvidia specs for the gtx 260 have a minimum system required 500W, with my calculation, with two gtx 260 I was reaching the 500W so I am afraid I did something wrong.

Any feedback on this will be much much appreciated, probably I made some major mistakes and I hope in your helps.

Cheers

You should get GPUs much newer than the 460s or 260s but everything else is fine, also whats your budget so we can give better recommendations. For the GPU I'd recommend going with whatever GTX 900/700 fits your budget or a similar AMD R9/R7 200 series GPU. Even though this is more of a just for fun build if you ever want to use it having an up to date GPU would be better especially as everything else in the build is current gen.

My Build

 - i5 4670k @ 4.4GHz - MSI z87m Mobo - 16Gb 1866MHz RAM - MSI R9 290 - Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb - 2 x 1Tb WD Blue - CX600m - H55 AIO cooler - Fractal Node 804 - Lg 25um64-s Ultrawide screen monitor -  http://pcpartpicker.com/user/colec18/saved/9FKXsY

Hi thanks for the lighting fast answer!

My budget is as cheap a possible, even though I would like to stay in the range 200-300 pounds (In order to do so I plan to get second hands components off ebay)

I won't use this system for anything, I already have a laptop running  Win7 on a i7 4900MQ gtx 780m and a desktop running CentOS on a i5 and gtx 750ti. I am all set for my programming work and gaming.

The only purpose for this build is learning my way around the hardware and know a little on how to assemble a pc. Once I have a basic build in place I would like to try a small OC,

then try a more pushed OC by putting in place a water cooled system. Since I am a noob, a lot can go wrong and the hardware can burn or get wet, so using cheap components wont be too much of a loss if something happens. That s why I chose those old GPUs, actually two generation old (Fermi architecture), and I would like to throw in a SLI system, using two  gtx 260 if can probably get both off ebay for 30~ pounds.

All this is in a preparation for future build in a year/year and half, I am waiting for next Nvidia architecture (called Pascal) to do my new rig.

@chutia, well I actually have already a media server, me and my flat mate are using an old laptop of mine (5 years old or so) that we attached to a projector in the living room.

So to be honest I don't know what I will do with that build after I have done all my experimentations, also I cannot buy the cheapest components ever because I still want to be able to OC it, so at the end I tried to get the cheapest components that let me have a SLI configuration and OC capabilities.
