Hey LTT forum! Some relatives of mine wanted to replace their existing home network setup, and although I've read a bit on the topics, I still can't make a decision. I had read the FAQ section of this forum, but there are a few things I'm not clear on. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Right now, they have an older Touchstone Telepathy modem and a Linksys Wireless-G router. They unfortunately have Comcast and although they couldn't tell me what speed internet they have, I don't anticipate it being over 20Mbps. They don't stream Netflix videos, HD Youtube content, or play games, so I don't think they need something top of the line. I'd like to upgrade them to a newer modem and at least a Wireless-N router, as I'm not sure if buying a Wireless-AC one is worthwhile at this point. They seem to only use their network to access the internet, and as I understand it, the only thing buying a better/faster router would do is improve connections to the network itself, instead of the internet connection. On top of that, I don't think they have many, if any at all, devices that have a Wireless-AC capable adapter. Is it worth buying one of the Wireless-AC routers at this time? Also, as I understand it, even upgrading the modem shouldn't show a big increase in internet speeds, but I'd like to get them a newer one anyway. I've put some research into that as well, but I couldn't find if it's necessary to buy a higher-quality modem, especially if they don't have a very fast internet connection from their ISP. I'd like to get one that's capable of delivering at least 100Mbps in the event that they somehow get service that good in their area.

I was looking at this model for a modem, and this model for a router. I wanted at least a dual-band router, as they can have many devices connected at once, congesting the 2.4GHz band. Also, they have a pretty big house, so range is a concern. I don't believe budget is a big concern here, but I don't want them to spend more than they need to. Being able to set any modem or router up easily is a plus as well. Does anyone have any recommendations for either a router or a modem? I can try to provide more information, if needed.

Thanks!
