In Windows 8.1, press Alt+Tab while in-game and you can switch to the desktop very quickly.

 

Prior to the update, Windows 8 would give me a hassle by bringing me to the Metro Start menu when using that hotkey, and when I clicked the desktop button from there it would bring me back to the game.
