This might be the wrong section but since V-sync is gaming releated I think it should belong here.

So why is it a thing? Why can't we simply have fps limiter sliders? So that if our framerate drops below 60 where aren't go to be at 30 fps?

Am I missing something? Because I don't get why we can't simply have  max fps sliders that we can adjust to the hz of our monitors.

Limiting fps alone doesn't always prevent tearing.

SNIP

Putting a MAX fps limit would still result in screen tearing especially when the FPS drops ie you set a 60 cap, but get frame drops to 40 =  tearing

VSync, attempts to synchronise the games framerate with the monitors vertical refresh rate, it will delay rendered frames in a buffer until the previous frames have been displayed, that means you get 60fps but with the downside of input lag because the frame you were controlling could be withheld until the monitor is ready to display it

(did that make any sense?)

As others say screen tearing. Depends on the game/engine how bad it is. A game like Shadows of Mordor seemed butter smooth at an unlocked 60 (can't hit 60 all the time). So does World of Warcraft (vsync sucks in that game and prob cus I move mouse around fast). Other games look like crap. Far Cry 4 would be one.

We ARE getting stuff/have stuff that makes an unlocked look much better though. Freesync/Gsync.

Also we have the ability to lock to any FPS we want is MSI afterburner already. You can limit any game to any FPS. Unless it is synced though it will still look bad in most games. Guild Wars 2 also has a 30/60 FPS limiter. Also looks bad not synced.

How to limit FPS in Afterburner/sync 30. You can try it without the sync for yourself. Most of the time. 60 sync>30 sync>can't hit 60 but past 30. There are exceptions. Unlocked past 60 can be much better. Mostly in competitive games where you are moving mouse super fast, as long as tearing is not horrible.

Because most games have DIGUSTING amounts of screen tearing, so I'll usually take an occasional stutter over my screen looking like it's having a seizure.

That being said, I'll typically leave it off for FPS multiplayer games, though I really only play TF2 in that genre.
