wifi router - netgear wgr614v9 - factory reset then latest firmware

asus p8z77 deluxe-i -fresh win764 install, latest drivers from asus website.

wifi strength is strong 4/5 bars. connected at 54megs.

lan transfers happen at about 1-4 megs.

isp is 30 down 3 up. plugging box directly in via lan, i get 29.9 down and 3.3up. [nb-just not using wifi and plugging directly in is not an option apart from testing].

wifi internet downloading anything [say for eg steam game] will start at 1.5megs and then go down to 150k and stay there [until restart or reset connection]. same for you tube videos [youtube-dl].

now.

taking two laptops, one ubuntu 14.04 broadcom wifi chip, another win7 intel wifi chip; and sitting them in the same place as the desktop p8z77 machine, i can run the same tests [steam+youtube] and get 3-3.5meg sustaind download.

following from this i am taking it that its the p8z77 box where the issue lies.

all settings on all machines are default. all tests performed are performed while all other machines are powered down.

thoughts?

-snip-

WiFi depression? Give it some Abilify or Cymbalta.

As for your issue, I have that happen, too. It may have to do with your HDD.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

Never forget 01-28-2015, the year of the Great Wifi depression.

Milions of IT employees got fired after the Wifi shortage, bilions  stopped using the internet on their mobile devices, they had to use massive long cables.

It was worse than the Apocalypse, even worse then the Millenium bug.

all numbers are Mb

hard drives affecting wifi speed = ?

anyone have ideas on why wifi would be stuck at 150kbs (--yes "k")

any nearby devices which uses the 2.4GHz frequency range will affect your Wifi speeds

also how far away you are from the router?

distance and the object between the router and the devices will affect speed

and if you walls have metal objects, they will affect speed too

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.
