About a year ago, I completed my first build and am satisfied with it to this day. I enjoyed building it so much, that I'm anticipating my next build. Due to recent personal issues, I'm in the process of joining the military. Since I am planning on giving my first build to a family member, I'm planning out my second build. I know it's not right to be bias with computers and computer components but I'm heavily favored towards AMD for my processor and Graphics Card. Every computer I've owned have had either an AMD CPU, Graphics Card or Both. Due to my familiarity with AMD and how reliable their products have been to me, I've decided to build myself a "Red Machine". I post this to seek advice to ways to either improve this plan or things I'll need to be cautious about with this build. This will be started after I finish training for the military though so no rush necessary.

As an quick note before i go into the Build, I am extremely hesitant about using liquid cooling system and overclocking. I've heard if Liquid cooling systems are installed incorrectly, they can create a new point of failure in the system and may damage the rest of the components. I'm not too keen on overclocking my system either because I'm not really much for pushing my system to the extreme where it could cause damage to it.

On that note, Here's the build Plan.

PC Part Picker List: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jzvrLk

Planned Build:

Case: Corsair Vengenance C70 Black

Mobo: ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Mobo

CPU:AMD FX-8350 Black Edition 8-core 4.0 Ghz (4.2 GHz Turbo)

Graphics Card(s): Asus Radeon R9 290X 4GB DirectCU II (x2)

Memory Kit(s): AMD R9 2400 (O.C.) 16GB (2 x 8GB) Memory Kit (x2)

HDD/SSD: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1 TB 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Optic Drive: ASUS Blu-Ray Burner

CPU Cooler: be quiet! PURE ROCK

Extra Fans: Corsair Air Series AF120 twin pack (red)
Corsair Air Series AF140 Red LED (x2)

Wireless Adapter: ASUS PCE-N15 wi-fi adapter

PSU: Corsair RM 1000 80+ Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I hope this is something that is beyond excellent for a new builder.

Oh please, no. I beg you. If I were you, I would drop that CPU and Motherboard and go for a Z97 and 4690K.

The only things that stand out as changes I would recommend are the AF series fans will be loud and get a HX 1000 over the RM 1000.

@Interfectorem - Why do you suggest switching my mobo and CPU from the Crosshair Formula-Z/FX-8350 to the Z97/4690K?

@AfroLegend - Thanks for the PSU change, that does seem like a better option. what would you suggest for switching the AF series fans for?

Actually the OP had a hybrid drive. It's both an SSD and HDD.. Thanks for the suggestion to change out too :)

Because the AM3+ is a dead platform, no upgrade path, the AMD FX-8350, while offering some decent performance, is simply outclassed by the i5 4690K in most aspects while consuming less energy.

Not really, it just uses the tiny ssd part as a cash. a hybrid drive is a tiny bit better than just a hard drive, but not even close to a full ssd and hard drive.

And lower power consumption can mean less power needed and possibly a cheaper PSU, right? seems great to me. Is there a particular Z97 Mobo you'd recommend?

Understood. I'll make the switch then. The SSD will be used mostly for the os, right? Any other programs or such I should put on it?

Yes possibly. A Z97 motherboard that I would recommend, well, anything above $150 if you want a really solid Z97 motherboard. Anything from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock from the $150 mark and up is bound to be good, not saying anything below is bad though. The Asus ROG line and most MSI Gaming series offer a nice looking red and black color scheme if that's what you're looking for.

It is good for any files you use a lot, a 512gb ssd can hold everything but huge game librarys, uncompressed video, and other very large files. the hdd is just for mundane things that you may not use very often so the speed doesn't matter as much.

That is exactly what I'm looking for. I'll definitely look into them more. Thanks. I'll post the edited version of this build later

Okay. This will be mostly a video/gaming PC so I'll switch out the Hybrid drive for the SSD and HHD drives. Again, Thanks Nate

@., @Interfectorem - While looking on newegg for the replacement parts, I cam acrossed a suggested part, AMD FX-9590. Is this even considerable? I'm don't have a budget for this build but I still dont want to spend this crazy of money.

not really, it is just an overclocked 8350 with huge problems. It overheats unless you have a dual tower air cooler, 280mm+ AIO or a custom loop. It also needs a great motherboard or the motherboard could die. The 4690k is a MUCH better option for less money.

Got it. I select the i5-4690k with the Maximus VII Formula mobo. Hopefully thats a good combo

I wouldn't go so overkill on the motherboard, the MSI Gaming 5 will be basically as good for half the price.

Here's the revised build for my Red Machine. I decided to choose stick with parts that I believe will give me more "bang-for-my-buck". Mostly, ASUS and corsair. Just wondering if the PSU is enough. NOTE: I will NOT be overclocking w/ this system.
