Help With Choosing A New Graphics Card

KieranThePCGuy

Hi all,

Having a bit of a thought here and can't make my mind up.

I currently have a 1GB HD6850 from XFX (The thing is stupidly loud, however, I did OC it.) so any of these graphics cards will be a notable improvement.

I have been looking at the GTX770, but the price is putting me off, about £330. I have been looking at the 7970 GHz edition for about the same price.

However, I have been looking at the 7950 as that's about £230, so it's a lot cheaper. I am thinking of OC'ing it so maybe I can get near a 7970 performance?

The only problem is I'm building a computer with a Red/Black colour scheme, and the only card that matches it is the XFX 7950, and I'm worried about the noise from the card, as I want to get a quieter system than what I currently have.

So basically, do you think I should save for the 7970GHz/770? - Will still OC them, but GPU Boost 2.0 is tempting me, Or get the 7950 and OC it? Which if I can get close to 7970 performance, then it would save me a lot of money. As stated above, I think any of these cards will be better than my current HD6850.

Thanks,

Kieran.

I prefer the 770, but that doesn't mean that the 770 is better. If I was you I shouldn't go for the 7950 and overclock it, get the most expensive card you van afford and then overclock that one to get even more performance!

The hd 7950 DC II from asus is also red and black, so that's another option. Personally I would wait a couple months for the new AMD series.

A overclocked 7950 is very close to a 7970 which isn't very behind a 770. In my opinion, If you want to save some money and overclock your GPU, a 7950 is a great option. If you want to either wait or save up a couple extra hundred dollars, get the 780 (The 780 is so much better for the price point, get the 770 if you can't afford the 780) or wait for AMD's new generation of graphics card.

Sorry on the late reply, I so would, but for some reason the price of the 7970 GHz and 770 is putting me off, I been thinking on waiting for AMD's new GPU's.

Thanks for letting me know, and sorry on the late reply, this is what I have recently been thinking. Then decide on what GPU to buy, I might also have more money saved by then :D

The performance increase from the 9000 series probably won't be that high and look , £220 7950 :p

If you are looking at 7970's skip the GHz Editions and go with a vanilla card preferably with an aftermarket cooler such as a Sapphire Dual-X.  The GE is simply a boosted 7970 and you will get the same if not better results overclocking yourself for way less money.
