Is this a better idea?

When i was running afterburner, the gpu crashed cos i maxed out the power and temp target and i overvolted. Now with PrecisionX, i managed to get it stable at 1402Mhz with no effort (afterburner was 1491mhz with crashes).

Is this a better approach to keep power target at 110% and temp target at 84 degrees to see how far it will go rather than maxing out the targets and overvolting

Yes, a much better method. Just maxing everything and causing a crash won't let you know the card's limits. Increase the clock bit by bit until you crash, then maybe increase the voltage a little and try again.

Just go slowly, don't bump everything to the right. Go SLOWLY until you have issue to your card, then go back to the previous clock speed when it was stable. After that just do stability test.
