DIY head tracking for DIY rift

So I have been toying around with making a home-built oculus rift style VR headset. google it - its a thing

so far I am using a Ritech 3D "magic box" that is essentially a plastic google cardboard with straps with a Galaxy S4 (1080p) I am able to stream my desktop using a few different apps, most induce lag and offer poor frame rates, however using Limelight to emulate an Nvidia Sheild I am able to stream 1080p @ 60fps with 25ms of lag (same as a monitor really)

Using Vireio Perception it can inject DLL's into games to make them run in side-by-side 3d

The problem is head tracking.

Does any one here use head tracking at all, if so what, why and how?

I have seen people mount IR LEDs to their headsets and use a webcam to track them - any experience with this?
