Hi all, I have a doubt of either my usb device went wrong or my mobo is having trouble?

Recently I bought a wifi adapter(TP-link) and I had been using it for a few times only. One day, it suddenly turned into malfunction and it stated that the PC couldn't recognize the device. Afterwards, I tried that wifi adapter on another PC and it showed the same error message.

One thing is when I unplugged the wifi adapter from the first PC, the adapter looked a little bit black on its connector (like got burnt) and my mouse and keyboard that connected on that PC have the same problem as well. Therefore, I would like to hear and see any opinions of experts of my issue. Does the problem root from my Mobo or just the wifi adapter died for no reason?

Thanks in advance! :)

most likely that ports have some issues with voltage which cause the burn marks you see on the USB ports

I say confirm this with a spare mouse and see if the burn marks appear on the spare mouse

prepare for RMA of the mobo and the Wifi adapter

Did you have a surge or anything? USB devices tend to be affected by a surge.

Pardon, could you tell me what is RMA? :D pretty poor on this kind of knowledge.

Yes, I'm now working with another mouse and waiting for the results if it has the burn mark.

:/

Thanks! :)

RMA = merchandise return mailing acknowledgment

basically returning the mobo for repairs or replacement

Sir, I don't think so. Your surge means if my USB devices have sudden forward or backward movements? Every time I use my USB devices, I will plug and unplug them smoothly and try not to damage them. :)

Thanks!

Surge means a sudden high amount of voltage like during a lightning storm when the power goes out

Oh okay! But it must be within the warranty period isn't it?

That mobo has been 2-3 years in my PC~

I think I can't claim any replacement. ^_^

No, I didn't mean that surge. I meant electrical surge, as in too much voltage enters into your computer and damages USB devices. This happens alot with USB wifi adapters.

Hmm about that I'm not sure. How can I know if that really happens? :o

and of course how to prevent this from happening?

You can't prevent an electrical surge from happening. Most people have a surge protector though to plug their computer into and then plug into the wall outlet. You generally do not want to plug your power supply straight into the wall outlet. I actually don't know anyone that does, even non-tech savy people I know.
