My shop teacher is using a DOS PC to use his in graver for metal plates and plaques, and he is looking for a way to convert his windows cad blueprints onto his dos computer so he can engrave them, is it possible? And he doesn't want a new computer cause a new controller for the engraver is around $30,000 which he doesn't have

"dir" sounds more like Dir(ectory) (="Folder" for those too young to remember DOS), not a file type...

That wasn't what I was asking, HOW does the computer need the files to execute them.

I wasn't telling you but the OP.

He said it was "dir" and I said why I don't believe that to be correct.

I assume you saw him type dir and thought it was the file extension.

DIR in DOS prints a list of all files and folders in the current working directory, so for example if you wanted to see the contents of a directory on your c drive called "files" you'd use the commands

C: > Enter (Sets the c drive as the working drive)CD files > Enter (Changes directory from C: to C:\files)Dir > Enter (Prints a list of all files and folders in the working dir)
God how I miss DOS so much.

like transferring? If that, however a computer with non USB, or anything like that can.

I think he meant WHAT kind of file program uses. Like .tiff or .svg for pictures. As for transferring I'm guessing it uses either floppies or maybe CDs. If you can convert/export modern CAD file to whatever DOS software uses, this problem is solved. And if it fits to media you will be using to transfer it with.
