Which Windows version? When I tried to boot without running the tool windows 7 crashed everytime at boot up.

Every windows version from Win95 is plug&play (this means you can take the hdd from a pc to another without problems from windows itself (not from drivers))

Your problem was probably a driver problem

Yeah the tool that is used in the guide I linked deletes the drivers releated to the old Motherboard which let's you boot into windows without problems. I guess you could do it manually if you want.
