replace psu on dell t1700

I've been reading that dell mobo's rquire stock dell PSU to be able to connect successfully. does anyone know if this is still the case? if, so is there a workaround? i'm reading horror stories of hooking up a offbrand psu and frying the whole system but they are all a few years old.

 

( Just bought a 750ti cause my PSU is only 365w ay 90% and now finding I could have gone with 270x for same price and a little bit nicer PSU. still can return it if I want to go the other way)

 

im a noob to hardware so please be nice and thorough in any explainations. thanks! cheers, DZA
