Hey guys,

I'd like to have some opinions from you about which CPU is right when being on a budget.

For me, there are two contestors, the Intel G3258 and the Athlon x4 860K.

Keep in mind that they won't be overclocked, since the builds are mostly consumer-oriented. (consumers often lack basic PC-skills)

I know that single-core performance wise, the G3258 eats the 860K easily, but since Multi-Threaded applications are more and more arising, wouldn't the 860K outperform the G3258?

Thanks for your non-fanboyish comments :-)

Id say the FX 4300 is a better choice than the Athlon 860k.
The 860k is the most powerful CPU on that socket.
But with the 4300 the system can be upgraded to the 8300 easily.

The G3258 and Athlon 860k has about the same performance, It comes down to preference in the end.

That is right, but when the consumer would like to upgrade in 1-2 years, AM3+ CPUs would eventually not be sold anymore.

(Does someone have a Roadmap of AMD product launches?)

I have no idea how the situation is in other countries, but over here FM2+ mainboards are either not available at shops or are expensive (100+$).

So currently, Mainboards/CPU combination of 1150 is about 60$ cheaper.

I'm about to start building more computers for customers and since they mostly try to get the most out of their money, I don't look at i7 and 83xx CPUs.

My current setup is built on an 3770k clocked at 4.5 GHz but that's irrelevant in this discussion.

I guess use both. For people who need multithreaded work loads pick the amd. And just performance and cheap the intel one.

I can almost assure anyone the higher end AM3+ processors will be sold atleast until late 2016, Possibly mid/late 2017.

Here in sweden there are even some small companies still selling AM2 CPU's.

And there will also be people upgrading their rigs so you can buy used CPU's.

AMD's next line of CPU's will be released next year if im not mistaken.

Well, up there in the north, everything is different ;-)

Won't the next release be more on the APU side of AMDs branch?

I'm looking forward to see new desktop CPUs from AMD.

Are these systems for gaming?

Otherwise I'd use a Kaveri APU like an A8 7600.

On the low end the FS1b Kabini APUs or J1800/J1900 SOCs.

the upgrade path for Intel is much better than AMD at the moment

The Pentium will be great for general use and when the official Broadwell CPUs are out he could get the i5 CPUs

but for better support he will need to get H97 or Z97 boards

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Already built a computer with the 860K and a R7 260x, but if they don't want to game, I would prefer an A10-5800k or similar. (Or a Kabini Jaguar APU, performance/power ratio is perfect for home use like youtube, facebook etc.)

Yes it is, but x97 boards are a bit too expensive just for keeping the upgrade path...

I'd try go with a Low Power Kabini solution, low power consumption, cool, quiet and potentially fanless is pretty important for customers are selling points.
