Is my 4790K acceptable? Temperatures seem VERY HIGH

The temps are a tad high but I don't think it looks like anything to freak out about, not with corsair sp120's. They are far from brilliant. You are never going to get anywhere near those temps outside of aida64

I agree on both counts.  You could try different fans, but I doubt the changes would be stellar. And AIDA64 should be your worst case scenario, assuming you are going to change back to adaptive once you've proven your overclock.

 

When in doubt though, run whatever applications/games you intend to normally use for a few hours with some sort of temperature monitoring in the background.

So I checked the Intel forums and they have a troubleshooting thread for this chip: https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-23517

 

Following the guide, I disabled XMP and installed the XTU program, applying the settings shown in the first reply (since I have the same motherboard) and ran the Intel stress test. I was averaging 55 degrees. Ran Aida64 with the same settings and got the same temps maxing out at 60 on the cores. The downside to the new settings is that max frequency is 4.2Ghz rather than 4.4 (Aida reports only 4Ghz for some reason) because of lower TDP (I'm guessing). Here is a screen of default settings/new settings.

Anyway this seems to indicate that the default settings on my board is adding way too much power which is causing this unnecessary heat. What are your thoughts on this?

looks like xmp is enabled because all cores are at 44x

 

you can expect your boards auto voltage rules to dump 1.2-1.3V into your cpu with xmp enabled. this is true for all boards

Even though it shows 44x as the target, with the new power settings (the values on the right - compare default/proposed) the CPU only reaches 4.2x.

 

But how can 4.4Ghz with XMP enabled and default bios settings give me temps in the mid 70s, compared to these settings now giving me mid 55s, albeit only reaching 4.2Ghz and without XMP? The difference in temps is crazy.

another way to check individual core frequency is to right click on the cpu tab of cpuz . do this when the cpu is under load. use xtu stress test to load up cpu.  also click the blue wrench in xtu in bottom right corner. select core voltage so you can monitor that
