I have an HP laptop that used to run fine, but even after a factory reset is slow.  I'm sure I can figure this out.  Is it worth pumping any money or effort into this machine? It needs the following:

-Keyboard

-Charger (The current one works, but the connector is starting to show the wires

-Power Jack (Not crucial, but the charger sits a bit loose)

-One of the USB ports has power, so it will charge something, but it doesn't transmit data.

-Battery is about 2 months old

This laptop is not my daily driver, I use it laying in bed or when i'm out.  If it's worth repairing, i'll probably stick an SSD in it too.

Now, the processor is pretty shitty, but it's not used for anything major. When I got it, it ran pretty well everything I threw at it, now I get like 15fps on GTA:SA

AMD E-450 (1.65Ghz) APU

6GB RAM (not sure the speed or anything)
650GB 5400 HDD, which I may swap for an SSD

I'm running the win10 preview, it seems to work well, the laptop is a Pavilion G6 by HP

I'd say probably not worth repairing. It's an old laptop and it's kinda throwing good money after bad, so to speak. I'd just save up for a new one (IMO). How old is it exactly?

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

The g6 is a bitch. The slowness sounds like a failed hard drive.

As for the repairs... Get a universal charger, forgo the keyboard (I could literally ship you one I have dozens of failed g6s in my graveyard.) unless you cannot use the machine without it, that one USB port only being power is by design not fault, and the battery should be fine.

It's worth the SSD, if you don't mind the heat that sombitch kicks out.

No. It is SO not worth repairing. If you're running the win10 preview that might be why it's running slow after the factory reset.

Don't put money into it, get a new one. It will be so, so much more worth it for your wallet.

- If you are going to get a new laptop, what would your price range be? (Please don't get another HP, they suck, honestly.)

Downloading programs from CNet is not a good idea, as they will commonly include unwanted, and sometimes dangerous bloatware... The more you know.

How can the slowness mean a failed HDD? If it were a failed HDD, the thing would be making a shitload of noises and probably not even starting up at all.

A USB port is designed to transmit data, not just charge things. The computer is old, they wouldn't have designed a USB port solely for charging purposes, that's just ridiculous to say.

How would the SSD put out so much heat?

It's not worth putting that much money into it, and getting a universal charger wouldn't solve much, the charger, as he stated sits loose in the port, meaning the port is loose/busted.

The USB port has a shorted pin inside, I think, I never looked inside it.  But I know it powers my amp if I use my headset.  The charger is still pretty tight, but i'm just being picky.  If I was going to put money into it, I might as well drop an extra 10 dollars to replace it while i'm in there to save the trouble better.  The keyboard actually does still work, however it is pretty worn out.  The matte finish is pretty much gone, and they stick sometimes, again, they're inexpensive.  I tested the HDD, and after I did the factory reset I had windows 7, which is the default OS.  Win10 preview seemed to make it a bit better, actually.

I think I bought the computer in 2012.  For what I use it for, it does work good enough.  Actually, I just updated the bios and it appears to be running fine, though that may change once it warms up.  If I were to buy a new one, it would have a half decent CPU in it, an i5 or i7, 8gb of ram.  Though, like I said, it's not a HUGE deal to use it now, I have a desktop that I normally use.

Well if you're looking for a daily driver, I'd suggest maybe upgrading, but if it's getting long in the tooth it'd be better to replace it, rather than putting money into it now, and then having to do so again before buying another laptop.

It's up to you, but if you have a desktop that you use, and you can replace it, then I don't really know, because it's not my choice, it's yours.

I say say it might be a good idea for you to upgrade. But it ultimately is up to you, hope you can figure it out, if you have any questions I'm definitely open to answering more.

FailING.

IIRC there was one "Super charger" USB port on the G6.

The SSD would not make a lot of heat, that brand laptop is a toasty little sucker in general.

He also said the charging port is fine, but a little finicky.

The G6 is not that bad of a machine, aside from the high ROF.

I have never seen a mobo go on a G6, only ever HDDs, DVD drives, Screens, and in one case, the touchpad.

Well, I guess i'll stick with this thing as it is for now then.  I want to buy a better cpu+motherboard for my desktop first, I think my processor might be pooched on that one (keep getting Clock_Watchdog_Timeout on it).  Yes it does run quite hot.  That USB port did send data when I got it, its not a charging port.  It just stopped working one day.

If you think that that many things are biting the dust all at one time, I still suggest getting something new. Don't be too shabby, get something that will last. If you change your mind and look for a new one, just give me a price range and I'm sure I can help you find something to fit your needs.
