It's good practice to do so but not always needed.

 

Also if you do uninstall I recommend you use DDU

Should  I always uninstall my gpu driver before installing a new one?

That's what I have been doing for some time.

 

I am using an amd gpu if it makes any difference, at all.

Yes you should. I had to reinstall Windows because I didn't think about it once.

That sounds like an unusual and severe case :o

I only uninstall the old driver if I'm jumping to an AMD gpu from a Nvidia GPU otherwise I never have had an issue.

DDU means/is what?

DDU is Display Driver uninstaller.

 

THe normall uninstaller of drivers always leave files behind which can conflict with new drivers. It caused my Nvidia driver to constantly crash (Went from HD7870xt to GTX 970) but DDU completely removed them and fixed the crashing issue.

The safe mode sh1t restarting my computer was slightly annoying though.

I thought they meant restart program not computer ><

But I prefer saying yes than no.
