Budget Workstations and Renderfarm

MzCatieB

Work has asked me to setup some configurations for are new office.

We currently make Video games and want to expand in the future.

Although i am fully capable of doing this exercise my self i thought i would see what you guys come up with.

The Goal is Maximum Performance on a low as possible budget.

I need setups for:

- Gaming Workstation (Games Design, 3D graphics (No High end Rendering)

- Graphics Workstation (Concept Art)

- Render Farm (Rendering 3D graphics and Game levels)

Budgets should be As low as you can, Dont worry about the Cases or Peripherals.

Have fun with it

Almost impossible to say, a budged is 100% necessary for build options

you could do all of those tasks on £500 pcs, but obviously the better the PC the faster and smoother it will be

what software do you predominately use for these tasks? what games are we talking? AAA titles? basic platformers? 8 bit games? card/casino games? text adventures?

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

the Game projects we are working on are currently 3d adventure style games like Assassins creed being built for PC/MAC/PS4 & XBO

Software we use is: 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, Adobe Creative Cloud and the Game engines we use are Unreal Engine 4, Unity and the Cryengine

And as for the Budget.

Think What is the best performing thing i can put together for this job... then pull it back a little (example: i7-5960x = no, but the i7-5930k is yes, Quadro K5200 = No,  Duel GTX Titan Blacks / Tripple GTX 980 = Yes) Think about the performance but think is there much between this and the 1 half the cost.

The Case me and my boss have chosen is the CoolerMaster HAF Stacker... so dont worry about space for storage or Radiators :P

  • 1 month later...

I don't know a whole lot about most of those programs, except for Blender.  I also don't know if you still want/need help.  But here's my suggestion: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/LtStaffel/saved/#view=tCF323

EDIT:  I went all out on the RAM because I know how Cycles render likes to force you to use the CPU a lot of times, so I was making sure there was enough memory to cover high poly and resolution scenes in Blender.

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

I have no idea on how these programs work, so this will be a wild guess...

..but, if they do support multi-gpus without the need for XF / SLI drivers, as well as not needing the PCIe 2.0 x16 speed, you could be looking at getting a a 5930k with 7 Gtx 970s. I know that such setup would work for a Folding / Boinc farming rig, maybe it also does for 3D rendering farms?

Otherwise, I guess that having a quad 970 setup will yield as much as 3x980, while costing less.
