As an indie developer in training (currently working on my first game) it got me thinking, when the game is at an acceptable level (beta) where should I release it for testing, the only thing that comes to mind like many indie developers is steam's greenlight system which in turn got me thinking, I look at steam's library and I can't help but feel it's over crouded, as an indie developer who want's to support other indie developers (apart from buying their games) I was wondering, is there space in the market for a new distribution platform (with all proceeds from sales go directly to the developers) and help promote indie developers and their games, any comments or suggestions would be most greatly received,

Thank you,

Max.

No dont release it on greenlight. Not yet. Make your own website or do a kickstarter

  • Kickstarter - DEMO READY
  • Your own Website with purchases
  • or a Dev blog

EDIT: Not that im preventing you going on greenlight. You can! But you need to have alot of fans. Release a demo here or somewhere people can test it and rate it.

What about GOG, its DRM free which is great :) they have a decent user base and are quite fair  http://www.gog.com/indie

nobody will publish your game for free, they will always take a cut, to pay for their servers, for handling support, and for helping you reach a bigger audience

Is there space in the market? maybe, but honestly I just want everything in once place, either DRM free, or from Steam

You could self publish?

honestly though I am SICK of half made games being released, why not release a single level of the game for free on your own website, and have people test it, or start a beta program

then when its ready you can find a platform to distribute on

If theres anything i learn from Game Dev Tycoon is that you dont self-publish unless you have alot of fans. And i didnt know GOG can have features like submit your own game

This forum is probably a good place to look for testers. Going through Greenlight and early access could kill your potential as you said.. It is very crowded, and often with shit products. You could try and publish on GoG AND steam once it is completed.

Hands of talented people that may be from this very forum

EDIT: Or a guy in the basement with sandals and green sweater with a car in covers, starting out from plain coded games moving up to offices, with many employees (GDT Ref.)

Thanks to everyone for the replies, there has been some interesting points raised, I will definatally try to get the game right before going for a beta release, I think personally I'd like to release the beta's for free and work with the feedback to see where the road goes, :)

Once it's verified by a moderator... A mysterious game from the 3 poster that no one knows... Hmm.
