Help with choosing PSU for i7 4790k, SLI GTX 970 G1 Gaming

Go to solution Solved by 1Scotty1,

1000W is overkill IMHO... I think the 850-860W will be more than enough :)

Hello,

I'm new to the forums though I like to lurk LTT and now it's time for me to ask for help from you good and experienced folks.

I'd like to mention that I'm totally new to OCing but not PC building as this is my 2nd build with first build having lived for 8 years now and counting, alas it's time to upgrade. I'm planning on buying the parts this week the sooner the better, however I'm facing a possible issue with PSU choice. I've watch a few reviews, discussion boards and so on about what PSU to pick for SLI GTX 970 G1 Gaming along with i7 4790k, but the thing is every discussion I check has different... situations so to say. My situation is that I plan on playing a lot of video games, editing some videos as well as giving a streaming a shot down the road when internet speeds get increased in the near future by going VDSL with my current ISP. Now the issue I'm facing is that I plan on OCing i7 4790k and SLI 970 G1 Gaming cards, but keep in mind it's not likely that I'll go into extremes with OCing but then again I won't go easy as well, somewhere in the middle, a balanced choice if you will... Anyway, as I said I'll OC processor and two GPUs and my parts that I picked are http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gWyKMp

So according to those discussion boards people suggested 850-860 platinum PSU for OCing GPUs, but there was no mention of OCing processor as well, so In my case, with no extreme OCing, will the PSU I picked be sufficient enough or do I need to look for 1000W?

Please go easy on me and just to make it clear, every part on the list is set, there won't be changes made to the shopping list, just PSU at this moment is required.

When you make a suggestion keep in mind that some PSUs are not available here so along with main suggestion mention a few alternatives.

EDIT: Oh right, price range... I'd like to keep it sub 230ish USD, since parts here might cost more than what's in USD.

EDIT 2: Also I forgot to mention that I'm from Europe.

Thanks in advance folks and since I'm at work, I might not be able to answer right away so don't think I won't be watching it.

Thanks for suggestions so far guys, also 0r10n did you buy anything from newegg, if so how was it like postage/tax/import or similar considering your location, since I'm literary your neighbor?

Also I just checked for SeaSonic X-850 and it seems that it's not being sold here, so only option is online ordering with might cost me more than AX860 might, I'll check that further later on.

The corsair hx850 isn't bad either. The hx850i is a bit better rated platinum.

Still new, but learning

I took a look at AX860 and AX860i, only difference people seem to mention is that with 'i' model you get Corsair Link to monitor PSU via software, as for the build quality and performance the difference is not noticeable compared to cost difference, and it seems that here it costs 30-40 USD more.

HX850 is a tad bit more expensive than the AX, I'll take a look at it later as well.

You will only need a 750W psu for that setup. This EVGA is excellent.

Looking at your spec, that G.Skill Ram won't fit under the cooler. You would need a low profile kit.

Something like this Kingston would fit under ok.

Just remember that corsair has different variations and is more tiered. http://www.corsair.com/en-us/power-supply-units

The AX should actually be better than the HX in regards to their tiers, so that one might be better if you can find a deal on it. And of course, you can't erally go wrong with the other brands, just try not to buy their lowest tiered models.

I honestly got mine when the sales and rebates lined up and got about 45% off the value. If you can find a decent one and can even upgrade due to a sale to a better model and higher wattage, you can't really knock it. Keep a look at newegg and ncixus and you might find something practically jump into your lap.

I've read some reviews of the G.Skill memory and at first I was concerned that it won't fit as well but then they mentioned that the fins can be removed, for easier fit under the cooler. But even with fins removed (at least on one RAM stick) it still won't have enough clearance under most coolers since it's still 2-3 mm higher than lowest point of cooler and because of that I started looking for coolers that can fit said Ram and I found out that Phanteks cooler has awesome reviews and grades for performance as well as the option to even mount one of the fans higher to allow more clearance for RAM module that has high profile. I saw someone demonstrating it with exact build like Mobo, CPU cooler and RAM memory with picture but I can't find it.

Also I'd love that EVGA Supernova but unfortunately they are not being sold here in my country, I could order one online but that means waiting for around 10-20 days for delivery depending from where it's being shipped and that's too long to wait for, I've been waiting since mid-December to build a new PC and I would like to avoid more delays. Also thank you for confirming that 750-860W PSU are enough.

Yep, I tossed my eye here and there on Corsair website looking for cases, PSU and memory while picking out parts, though HX and AX series are a bit unclear for me still, I guess HX is more for a quiet setup but in same performance as AX, though for that you'll pay more I guess, so I was fine with AX since I'm not aiming for Silent build. Case choice is purely because of sleek looks, fan slots and HDD docking bays removal/replacement opiton.
