I was hoping for an opinion on what the community thinks I should do with my current setup. I currently have a MBP and a desktop PC, with my desktop hooked up to my home theater setup with a 100 inch 1080p projector and 5.1 surround. I was hoping to upgrade my projector to a 4k model soon but the cheapest thing announced at CES was a Sony model for $8000 which my Dad has said is too much. The thing is I only ever use my home theater over school breaks because I simply don't have time otherwise, so I've been barely using my new PC. The idea that I've had watching all of these monitor videos from CES is that I could move my PC inside, buy a 4k monitor, and move my PC back to my home theater over breaks. This would involve buying new peripherals and headphones but at least I would be using my glorious PC instead of slumming it on my peasntish laptop all the time. I've attached a poll to this post and would appreciate feedback on what people think would give me the best experience, I've never had any experience with using a desktop monitor before so I don't know how that is, please check my parts list linked above for info on my system, and thank you.

Edit: Also I was thinking I could use a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter to use my laptop as a client for in-home streaming when I want to game in my home theater, as I've had great experience with steam in-home streaming so far.

I would honestly just say wait a few months for the technology to be released and the market to fluctuate a bit. There are a number of interesting things that the companies are trying, but thinking of buying the most recent 4k projectors straight after CES seems a bit soon. Even after just 3 to 6 months, the price points may change and other options and products may come out.

Heck, it's not like there is that much in regards to media that is 4k ready as is, then there are the scaling issues due to software and controller bottlenecks. I am with the too soon for 4k group, but in the end, it is of course up to you.

Still new, but learning

Nothing like a good "Need help deciding what to ask my dad for thread" to start the week. :)

Your current GPU can't produce enough power to give you a decent gaming experience on 4K. Of course, if $4000 would be TOO much that is more than enough for a 2nd 970, a 4K monitor and all the peripherals you need.

A good mechanical keyboard (Ducky Shine 3 DK9800), optical gaming mouse, 4K monitor, headphones and a 2nd 970 would be below $2000.

You could also go cheaper and just get a 27" 1440p display or a 24" 1080p display with the periphs and be done.

All of it better options than getting a ridiculous $8000 4K projector.

Did you look at my link? I have a 980 strix in a 250d mitx case so no two card config, I was hoping someone would release a dual 980 GPU card kind of like the 295X2, also the 980 isn't that bad for 4k...? I do DSR to 4k for more than half my games and get more than 60 fps. I was planning to buy a mechanical keyboard, and maybe a new mouse I currently have a logitech G700 so it's not that bad to run in wired mode. I have IE 80's that I could use but I would probably buy a closed back Sennheiser product in the long run.
