Water cooled 290 or a GtX 970.

   My little 7870 ghz is dying! It keeps Artifacting then freezing during games, i re-installed drivers and un- Oced it but it is still happening, warranty is up so im in the hunt for a new GPU. I dont wanna upgrade any time soon but i also dont wanna spend a crap ton so my max is like $300, unless i do amazon because i have $75 in gift cards. So this is my thought, i can get  < \ http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QHMPhM This. Or I can just buy a 970. What do you guys think?

GTX 970 performs slightly better, runs hella cooler (Although irrelevant because you're water-cooling the R9 290 anyways), uses less power (May not matter to all), it overclocks like a champ, it's newer (Not a strong point). I have nothing against the R9 290, I was in fact in your shoes a while ago, choosing between the GTX 970 and an R9 290. The GTX 970 has also some of the Nvidia features if that matters to you.

Gigabyte 970 G1 has performance of a watercooled gpu on air its probably best air cooler ever created so not like your 290 will oc more really and most games will run better on a 970 just off drivers and optimization.
