Freelance programming?

Hello everyone!

I've been freelance writing and editing for about two years now. More often than not the pay is shitty, but I enjoy doing it and being able to work on my terms. For example, I'm very much a night owl, and thus my past few weeks have been from 1pm to 5am, which wouldn't really work for most jobs.

I've started thinking about learning to code, as anything technology based is really only going to grow in demand. Has anyone here done this? I'd like to know which languages I should learn for starters, what the pay is like, and fulfilling it is.
