GPU back gets extremely hot

Go to solution Solved by lani100,

I have an Evga GTX 780 SC and its back gets kinda hot. At idle, my IR reader reports around 60°C, but under full load with Valley I got 93°C. Someone please tell me that this is terrible and whether a backplate would help.

Is that temp of 93 measured with an IR reader or the temp you see in Valley?

If so I would suggest to take the cooler of and replace the thermal paste, a backplate will help a tiny bit like 5c max.

That was measured with the IR-Reader on the back side. Valley and Precision X said that my Core-Temp was around 70° with the fans at 40%.

I did replace the thermal compound a month ago while cleaning my 780, but I have it overclocked and overvolted....not by too much though.

Do you even custom Bios, bro?

You can set a max temp for the card so it won't go over if you like. You can also get some case fan for better air flow in your case that will help cooling the gpu.

70c core temp is fine, nothing wrong there, Ir reader will read the temp of the room + heat from the gpu maybe , but i have no idea how it ended up 95c

as long as the core never goes above 80 then i would call it ok. But if your GPU is that hot then it just cant be getting fresh air! and did u cheack ur cooler has a good mount to the core as that can have a massive effect.

but u need to check out ur air flow there mate!

Yeah, I can barely touch that backplate even when idling. My GPU is a bit restricted by my air-cooler, but the other PCIe-slots are slow. I have a custom fan curve set up, it panics at 75°C, so the GPU won't die because it overheated too much once. What I'm more concerned about is the back-side of the Vram getting above 90°, which might slowly kill my card...

Anyways thanks for the answers, I think I'll try a backplate and/or liquid cooling my CPU, so my Card gets more air ;)

Before you waste time or money with water cooling or anything else make sure your heat sink has a good seal. That is not a normal temperature range at all from your description. You should be able to comfortably touch the back plate of your gpu when idling. I was able to do so with a 7970 .... something most would consider a space heater. Hell, my 970 sits just above room temperature ... something doesn't seem right here. Have you messed with the heatsink at all? Removed it out of curiosity? Try tightening using a screwdriver to check how loose it is. If you are able to tighten the screws with barely any pressure then that is a good indication that it has been messed with and inadequately reinstalled.
