You could probably use something basic

maybe start off on something like a Celeron G1840 ($50), 4 gigs of ram ($50 for some Kingston) and something like a Gigabyte H81M-HD3 ($70) or Z87-HD3 ($75, would probably go with this one!) as a board. If you want a rackmount case you can grab something from Norco (like an RPC-270, $100).An EVGA 430w is cheap but still a nice PSU ($50).

For storage: Patriot Blaze 60gb SSD's are like $40 now, and you can pick up a 1TB WD Green for about $60, which should be plenty.

All up a $425 build

I use a similar setup for my PFSense and WS2012 servers and they work great. HTPC's aren't too demanding...I use an Athlon 64 box as mine (WMC and plex!) and it works fine, so this thing will breeze through it.

pc specs: 4 function calculator / 8 digit lcd display / colored numeric and function buttons

would somthing like that make a decent game server as well? for games like insurgency, dayz

Yes.   I have a Poweredge 1950 III  running in a data centre  running cod servers, mincraft hosts and 20 odd virtual machines all at the same time.  They are still fairly fast powerfull servers and a good for game hosting as well as loads of other things.

Also forgot to say, i know i mentioned the 1950,  2950 you can build to the same spec just with more hard drives.  they use arround the same ammount of power if thats a concern but are definatly slightly quieter due to the larger fan size and can fit 1 more pci card in if you need it.

A power edge 1950 will take  Two 3.5 drives or Four 2.5 drives (depending on what model you get )  the 2950 will take up to six 3.5 drives or eight 2.5 drives and a further Two 3.5 drives (with the expantion cage wich are quite hard to get hold of now )

If your looking for maximum storage then go for a 2950 with the 2.5 drive slots.  the Raid card in them (Perc5i) will see up to 2TB disks so you can fit a fair ammount of storage in them. up to 3 pci cards and a DRAC card.

the III version of the 9th gen servers (so 1950, 2950 etc.)  will accept up to 64GB of ram (if you can get hold of the 8 gig sticks) otherwise the II will only take 32GB of ram.

proably a 2950 is a better choice for you.

I hope this covers most of what I think you want to know.

Yeh that would do fine. CPU's are a good spec and it looks like you have 4X4GB ram sticks so you can easly upgrade to 32GB if you ever need to.

you would be able to fit a maximum of 12TB in there.

Also comes with 2 4Gbs Fiber chanel nic's and a dule port gig nic.

Thats a good spec sever and the price is right at the moment.  It would do what your wanting it to do easly.

If your wanting to rack mount it your going to need some 2950 rails as it doesnt look like the seller is "including them"  but you can allways ask as some sellers will include them for free for you. so if your going for that one its woth asking!

I just looked the server up on the dell support and it looks like this one shiped with  SCSI interface for the hard drives.  meaning you couldnt use normal SATA hard drives with this if you wanted to upgrade.  I cant imagine anyone would have "upgraded" the hard drive back plane. so you would only be able to use 80pin SCSI drives.

Just check with the seller if its SCSI or SAS/SATA for the hard drives.

heres the link to the shiped spec of the server for you:  http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/GD3KDG1/configuration

Maybe. your going to have to modify the fan so it can connect to the hot swap fan connectors on the motherboard.  so you will be cutting and soldering wires.  There seems to be verious methods on the internet to change the fan RPM's etc.   But this isnt going to be something you can leave on in your beadroom...

Yes you can have one CPU in it.  Just remove the CPU on socket 2.  the server will tell you if its unhappy with how its configured.
