Minecraft Render Distance Spotting Exploit

I was playing a bit of competitive hunger games with my friends and they seem to know how to spot a player whenever the player is in their render distance (such as 16 chunks). They also claim that is in Vanilla minecraft and that it doesn't  require mods. How does one do this? Any ideas?

You can set it up to 32 in video settings

I know I can, but I might even be behind a mounatin and they can supposedly see me thru it.
