AMD vs Intel

Go to solution Solved by soarwiththesky,

Please don't ask this question.  It starts flame wars.  And it depends on the application. You can't just generalize.

Question is there, if you don't want to answer it, then dont. 'Flame Wars' or not, this is a general question for anyone that can feel free to answer through their experiences.

I really love AMD, but their processors are simply getting old. They are still good for some budget builds, but for true performance Intel's new stuff completely destroys the competition.

all we need now is an overclockable i3 (essentially a dual core with hyper threading) and amd is history

I'll buy whatever has the best overall practical performance at the under 100USD price point...

Would you rather go for AMD or Intel? Which performs better at certain things? Which is more affordable? You decide.

Maybe not.  AMD's new "Zen" CPU line is coming, and that could end up wrecking Intel on the consumer level.

I love amd cpus but their higher end stuff is getting old so I have to go with intel with regards to performance in general. I really wish amd would make new cpus so atleast we have more options.

They are with Zen. Instead of dumping out more stock that they will likely not sell (costing them money). They are doing the smart thing of conserving their resources and letting Jim Keller work his magic.

Inb4 threads locked.

I much prefer Intel because it's what I've grown up with and could never see myself going with an AMD CPU unless I was on an extremely tight budget, but even then...I'd still go with Intel just because of the frequency of their refresh of CPUs and new platforms. ;)

This is VERY dependant of the pricepoint, Once you can afford an i5 and a 1150 mobo, without skimping on GPU and PSU, it's basically go-for Intel. For everything else, it's AMD (Athlon 760K, 860K, FX 6300, FX 8320 or even an APU for a cheap family PC or HTPC).

And I'm very sorry for those who praise the G3258 as it's poor compatibility on multi-threaded games and proven performance inconsistency when gaming makes it a very poor choice for a gaming PC, or even for someone that needs more threads.

<3 Intel

Used AMD in the past and I will always go with Intel CPUs.

Not a great AMD experience?

AMD is bad for performance.

AMD is bad for budget.

AMD is bad.

Please, for the sake of keeping the thread decent and being a mature and smarter community, can we avoid comments that can annoy/bother some people? It's just a calling for the trolls and the flame wars...

Not really.

Had a bunch of issues with it in the past.

Care to elaborate (you don't have to)?

I wonder why people look down on APUs... They're (A8 or better) pretty amazing for the price...

Yup, the A10s don't make much sense unless they are in some offer or something, but the A8s and Even A6s are not bad parts, they are just not for most gamers.

Any HTPC would love them, A PC for the elderly or the young (or even a PC shared with the family) would do as well. If there is going to be some video demands and light gaming it's more than enough.
