New build causing an infuriating amount of trouble for me atm.

I7 5930

kraken x61

asus rampage v

kingston 3000mhz 16gb

two old Hitachi 320gb in raid 0

coolermaster 1000w psu

and just some radeon 7700 until my 970s come in.

I have had countless different error codes during testing and what not 50, 55, 6d and a few others mostly at random.

I have reseated my cpu, checked cpu and pins weren't damaged reseated RAM sticks etc etc which I think has solved most of the errors I have been getting still keep getting 55 now and again though.

However now im stuck with 1 or all RAM sticks installed I can get to windows and use the computer just fine on stock settings, but if I switch to xmp settings I can get to post and can bring up bios and have it sit there all day but if I try to load into os the computer restarts at windows splash screen.

The boot device led flashes red I believe during startup stock settings or xmp, but its constantly on when im sitting in bios with xmp settings, not sure if its like that in stock.

I have changed sata cables for both hds so they have their own dedicated one. They are old hard drives like 2009 2010, are they just getting a power surge from something causing them to error in xmp settings?

Would be nice to know the problem lies solely with them so I dont start RMAing all my new parts.

Xmp settings are

core ratio 30

min cpu cache ratio 24

max cpu cache ratio 24

dram freq 2400mhz

"two old Hitachi 320gb in raid 0"   God I hope you're ordering an SSD to go with that hardware :P

As for the XMP, it seems the processor supports DDR4-1333/1600/2133 sooooo I'm guessing it's setting it to the highest compatible perhaps? Not too sure on XMP in it's details.

Not sure why its says 2400mhz when im confirming the change but it is setting dram to 3000mhz and changing voltage to 1.35

Thw computer boots up just fine at stock settings and I can use the thing its only at xmp settings that it crashes at windows splash with the boot device led on constant red.

How can a 5930k six core cpu not be able to handle 3000mhz?

Manually setting nothing by dram to 2600 boots into windows

2800 doesnt seem to be working.

So what do I need to be RMAing then? The cpu the RAM or the mobo?

Believe me an ssd is on the to buy list, probably sooner now.

What I dont get is why I can get to post screen and then sit in bios all day with xmp settings at 3000mhz but it crashes at the windows splash screen.

That 2133 seems to be only at 1.2v whats the point of releasing 2400 2600 2800 3000 3200 ram if the second top flagship intel cpu wouldnt be able to run them at xmp settings.

It all seems to be working fine though, 2400Mhz is where it wants to work at, sometimes OC'ing doesn't work, as someone mentioned before it's very much a hit & miss subject, the 3000Mhz kit is only supported by something that can overclock to 3000Mhz, otherwise it'll run at the next supported speed, in this case, 2400Mhz

The BIOS probably only runs the ram at a safe standard speed, when you enter it, it doesn't overclock anything (possibly?)

Having 3 overclocking specific components not be able to overclock is hardly what I'd describe as "working fine" I just need to know whats going wrong.

Is it the old hds, as the boot device led is on?

Did I get a dodgy cpu that cant handle any dram overclocking

Or is it the mobo where the issue is.

Or is it a psu issue the extra voltage for the ram is causing it to mess up?

Well from what I can find, your motherboard supports it if it's overclocked, so you may have just got a standard CPU that doesn't support much dram overclocking.
