So my buddy got a GTX 970 and we were trying to benchmark it using the valley benchmark. The frame rates at 1080 at ultra settings were off. The average FPS was around 40.

My 780 runs a lot higher that his 970.

What could possibly be causing this?

His rig is an i5 8gb of ram and the GTx 970.

Which i5 does he have? That could be the issue.

No our rigs are not the the same. I have a i7 4790k 16gb of RAM and a GTX 780.

I dont think it would, but the 780 and 970 are close in preformance. Maybe the extra specs of yours - OCable i7 and 8GB extra of RAM - let your GPU preform closer to his 970.

It is an i5 4440 cpu.

I have the same in my main rig, and I had no troubles in Valley myself. Was it the only program open? Or was the CPU under heavy load at the same time (if so, that's why the FPS tanked).

The 970 is actually more like a 780ti in performance (nit picking I now, but its true).

Well he is not even getting close to 60 fps on valley. My cpu and extra ram do not make that drastic of a difference.

Uninstall and reinstall the nVidia drivers. Also look at how hot it's running. It may be thermal throttling the GPU if it's too hot.

What kind of frame rates are you getting? For reference. Your setup is very similar to his.

My avg fps is 58 with 8x aa and at ultra 1080p.

Install Unigine Heaven and 3D Mark as well. You can run cross checks.

You can compare in our threads here in the forum and see how many other people perform in 3D Mark and Valley.
