Since the day I bought my PC parts and put it together, I have always questioned my RAM configuration. I have had it in there both ways, and both times I have been told to do it the other way. I want to put that to rest right now.

That is an old picture, but everything in there except the GPU is the same. Is that RAM configuration correct, or should I put the one in the red slot in the black slot next to it?

you should place the RAM in same colored slots so they'll run in dual channel.

typically the arrangement is like this

RAM  Empty  RAM  Empty

or

Empty RAM  Empty RAM

both will run in Dual Channel

Your RAM is not in the right configuration, it will work but slower than its designed for. The 2 sticks should be in the same colored slots. Your config should look like this:

|RAM| |Empty| |RAM| |Empty|

OR

|Empty| |RAM| |Empty| |RAM|

I would go with the 2nd config to allow for air flow between the CPU cooler the the sticks.

Some motherboards however require the first and third slot to be populated first but that is not common. You should check the motherboard manual just in case. If you don't have it you can find at in the support page of your motherboard manufacturer website.

Your motherboard manual will tell you the config. Some motherboards even give an error message when posting, telling you to populate the correct slots. Generally slot 1 and slot 3 must be populated for dual channel memory. The slots will be lablelled on the motherboard somewhere close by, just look for it and you'll find it, in case you don't have the manual.
