This is my first time overclocking. I have a intel 4690k, corsair h110 and an msi gaming 5 motherboard. I went into my bios changed my core multiplier to 40 and my core voltage to 1.25V. Then I booted into windows and ran prime 95 for a few minutes since it was just a very light overclock. Then I went into my bios again, my mouse would not work and the bottom of the screen was glitchy and distorted. Then I tried to return my multiplier to its original value. When I did that everything seemed to work once I rebooted. But on a third reboot a screen came up and told me my overclock failed and returned my bios to original settings. What happened?

Also, I have not updated my bios because I have heard that it can cause your bios to be bricked. So if i should update it please tell me.

updating the BIOS is almost foolproof unless you shutdown your PC or you unplug the USB drive

make sure you only touch the multiplier and voltage

and please do not use Prime95 to test CPU

This, but you don't need to update the bios at all btw, if it isn't giving you any real problems like GPU incompatibility.

something to add here, do not use prime95 to test HASWELL cpu.

alternatively, use aida64 or occt or intel extreme tuning utility (there is a stress test function for cpu in there)

Your problem might be that your psu isnt giving off enough wattage.

an overclocked cpu, even an amd one, at full load only uses about 100-200w

unless if he's using a 300w psu with a gpu at full load, i highly doubt thats the problem.

Can i ask why not to use Prime95 to test a haswell cpu? I am also new to OCing and have Prime95 on my machine currently. It seems to stress the CPU pretty well, as with jsut stock cooler and clocks, im up at like 75C in small FTTs

Sometimes i troll...

When using adaptive Vcore the voltage spikes. But when using static of manual it doesn't

This, prime95 uses avx, which increases .1/.2v to your voltage, which could be fatal to haswell chip.

for example im running i5-4670k@4.4ghz at 1.3V, which is high considering its an intel chip, the spike in voltage will cause it to be 1.4/1.5v, wouldnt want that would we?

using prime95 on haswell could cause the chip to overheat at 80-100degree, not a good temperature.

1.4/1.5V has a high chance of burning out your chip, especially when you're going to run it for 24hr for stability test.

Edit: prime95 is only discouraged for haswell chip, as it tend to get high temperature compared to other intel/amd chip.

check on forum to see if your chip is not suitable for prime 95, some people with the same rig as you might have did something wrong before you, learn from their mistakes
