bumping old threads?

Long story short I was looking at the I7-5820k for crossfire 980s. I was reading newegg reviews for the processor and someone said it's best not to sli with that cpu because it doesn't have enough lanes. I then came to the forum and saw a post titled, "I don't understand the difference between 28 and 40 PCI lanes." It intrigued me and I asked, "I was looking at the description on newegg for this cpu but didn't see anything about pci lanes.How am I able to tell how many lanes a cpu has?" Someone then replied to me and showed me a chart that helped me out, I didn't even know lanes was something to look for when buying a new cpu, I thought it was the latest and greated and that I could do it all with it. A moderator (Glenwing) then came and said please do not bump old threads. (I had not even looked at the date of the thread, I just knew it contained information I was looking for and my question was in line with the topic.

I was under the impression that the best way to go about a forum was to search and see if there were already any threads pertaining to what I wanted/needed to know. However, now with the moderator saying not to bump old threads, am I supposed to just ignore all older threads and create a new one? I thought that was bad lol.

 

Someone who is an avid forum user let me know the etiquette and how forums are supposed to work.

Okay, this is something alot of people are mislead about.

PCI-E has 3 generations, each of them with different bandwidth's relative to the size.

To put it simply, GEN3 8X = GEN2 16X & GEN2 8X = GEN1 16X.

I know no graphics card that exceeds GEN3's 8X bandwidth.

When someone says that the 5820K only has 28 lanes that means that the processor can only utalize a total of 28 lanes, so 16 + 16 = 32.

It essentially means that one card will run on a 8X lane even if it is physically 16X.

Long story short, there will be literally no performance difference whatsoever. I mean like, none at all.

Bumping old posts is always a bad thing. Even on my motorcycle forum the mods will warn you or assign warning points for bumping an old thread.

Completely nailed it. Literally no difference in pci gen 3 8x/8x and 16x/16x. I mean the difference may be 1 or 2 fps and sometimes the pci gen 2 x16 outperforms the pci gen 3 x16 on certain games. Most boards will have a chip that will alow for more pcix lanes and they will cost a lot more.

Someone who is an avid forum user let me know the etiquette and how forums are supposed to work.

 

reasoning for the thread necro/old thread bumping is that information older than

say 30 days can be outdated and lead to improper conclusions or solutions.

 

so the idea is you find something through your search and it is an older topic, then

make your own thread, follow it and hopefully your questions get current solutions.

 

making informed decisions on out-dated information usually ends up wasting your

time/money.

 

don't be afraid to ask a moderator/administrator questions. we are not here to

bust-balls/heads, but to have the forums a safe, unscary place to ask maybe the

simplest of questions all the way to the complex.

 

hope this helps and rests your feelings of admins/mods are bad peeps.

we're pretty cool, i think.
