Z87 or Z97

Hakei

Currently building a new rig using a few old parts from my previous build. However, I would like to switch out the current motherboard I have (Asrock Z68M) with a newer board. I'm come across a pretty cheap Z87 board that has a bunch of features, but I'm wondering if I'm better off getting a Z97 board? For reference, this is the rest of the build:

Budget is a concern, and Z97 seems quite a bit more expensive for not a lot more performance. Am I shooting myself in the foot later for getting the Z87?

Z97 has broadwell support for one if you are interested in that, otherwise the Z87 must have a new enough bios to run haswell-refresh CPUs which might be an issue unless you can get the store to update the bios for you

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Better off with a Z97. Why? It'll save you alot of headache as some Z87 boards require bios updates. Not sure about the i5-4690K but the price difference isn't too much.

For a 4690K I would recommend a Z97 motherboard mostly because you don't need a bios update which Haswell Refresh requires on Z87 boards. Other than that you can go with Z87 if you want, it really depends on price.

Z97

I'm not too concerned about the bios update - I don't have a lot of experience with updating BIOS, but from what I've gathered, it seems easy enough.

I noticed you have the Z97S Krait board, which I had my eye out for aswell, as it has a rebate with my particular CPU. Was it easy enough to build with?

Yup, this board was eye catching as it was a board made by MSI (I love their BIOS UI) and also the color attracted me. Its almost just like every other motherboard and has a few VRMs. Mostly got the board for looks so I can do THISSSSSSSSSSSS a3cba661dc49f0a900acb5961b803a3d.png

Also has a SICK ASS FUCKING BIOS SCREEN.

That looks so awesome! :D I have the same memory sticks, so now I know it would look awesome :) I hope the Intel Cashback isn't too late for me.
