O2+ODAC  is a great choice. You can use them with up to 600 ohm cans I think.

It's also expensive. I recommend checking out such products as, in order of increasing price, the Syba SD-DAC63057, Fiio E10k, or Monoprice Desktop Headphone Amp.

Yes, but it is nice. If you want less then go for the monoprice one imo. Also Love your pic and title. Awesome.

It is good, and it is powerful, but the 600 ohms got nothing to do with this. Hard to drive or not isn't determined by the headphone's impedance. The hardest to drive commercial headphone in the market, the HE-6, is only 50 ohms.

i have the JDS Labs o2+odac custom. I use them with my my hd650s. fucking love it! but i have a hard time believing that it could power say the hd800 but it probably could power the beyerdynamic dt990 at 600ohms, from what i understand they are easy to power. when i listen to my hd650s i need to use the gain switch to make listening enjoyable. yes i can hear everything without the gain but its just not an immersive experience. at full volume without gain id say that would be a "normal listening level" with no headroom to enjoy whatever your listening to.

but for OP o2+odac is a great choice! id recommend getting something like the JDS labs custom version so that you can have them "add" RCA out from the DAC to feed some speakers too!

Here is where I would keep my frolics if I had any.

What does your assumption based on, if I may ask?

If it's based on the impedance (which is wrong, btw), they both got the same impedance, 300 ohms.

If it's based on the sensitivity/efficiency, they both got a very close rating, 103dB on HD650 vs 102dB on HD800

You can add RCA outs to a lot of things.

So use high gain? I don't see what the problem is. JDS has several different options for gain, you may have gotten a version with something lower than the original O2 design. In any case, the HD800 is not particularly hard to drive, ask anyone who has actually used them around here.

I'm still waiting for my sound meter to arrive (bought it from China - ebay) to get some pictures of low impedance vs high impedance. It's getting quite out of hands....:(

Those are slightly old pictures, the LED's now are red as the orange ones went out of production.

Cool. I wish there were graphs out there of headphones being "underpowered". Plenty of myths to be dispelled in that area.

I'll be damned! for the past several years i was under the impression that the HD800s where at 600ohms! well shucks learn something new every year xD

Even if it's at 600 ohms, that doesn't make it automatically harder to drive than the HD650. Like I posted before, the hardest to drive headphone in the market is only 50 ohms. Think about that.

That's actually easy to do, just don't have the equipment. Just have to plug it to a line-out or underpowered amp and record the sound coming out, distorting north and south. Problem is, it'd require a good mic, which I don't have. The one I'm using for chats are those $1 mic from ebay :)

all im saying is that the o2 amp has a hard time driving my hd650s without increasing the gain structure.

Then you're doing something wrong...HD650s can be powered by my phone.
