Which one shall satisfy my needs?

Leathal

Ok so im building a pc, I have a budget of about $1000 for graphics but if I don't need it,I don't want to spend it all. My choices are 2 windforce 980's , or 2 970 . 2 r9 290x lightning because omg they look amazing! or should I go for something like a 980 classified? I do want to play at 4k but most of my gaming will be done in 1440p, The only games I see myself playing at 4k is League and maybe Bf4, maybe some AW. So my goal is 1440p with access to 4k where I want to get acceptable fps and smoothness but I dont want to have to spend more than I need to. Also this setup should also work w/ star citizen. I know we are a long way from it but according to chris roberts they are not going to dumb it down and I want to play it at 4k. If 2 980 is too much over kill, 2 970 is cool too. The perfect card would be a lightning 980 imo,but who knows if they will make one. Also bottlenecks shouldn't be a problem.

I vote for SLI 980's for 4K gaming (you still wont hit 60 on some games max settings).

One 980 is in the sweet spot for 1440P gaming (Its what i use to drive my 1440P displays).

1 980 or 2 970's would work.

2 970 is enough for 1440p. Not worth spending extra $500 for 2 980. the 980 card is only +/- 20% better than the 970.. At this price 3 970 would outperform 2 980. don't get classified. not worth it, you pay extra for another bios and LN2 option (Liquid Nitrogen) which is useless.

2 970s. But don't expect 4k all setting maxed on AAA titles; in fact, even 2 980 won't achieve it.

That said, save your money, and get 2 970s. SLI Temps, Power bills and Mother Nature also approve it.

  1. Do you have a crazy powerfull PSU?
  2. Do you have a very spaced out PCI-e Mobo?
  3. Do you have great Airflow?
  4. Do you have good cable management?
  5. Is the 290X much cheaper than the 970?

If you answered "no" to any of the above, then NO to 2 290x. If you said yes.... maybe B) . I am not fond of putting 2 290x in CF, but it's certainly worth consideration.

Well... you could get a bit more performance with the 2 290x. Just be aware of the power bill. They won't run very cool, but you have good airflow, so it shouldn't be an issue.

If you want a 290x, go for it! There really isn't anything wrong with it.
