Recently (today) I bought some 1600MHz Ram, 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance Gaming, and I was wondering about something. This ram is an upgrade from my old 1066MHz RAM (6GB from 3x2GB sticks). My motherboard supports 6 DDR3 slots. I'm sure my Mobo can handle higher than 1066MHz but my CPU cant (Xeon W3503 - sucks, I know). If I was to put my old 6GB of Ram into my system aswell as the new 16GB kit, to make it 22GB, would this cause any problems?

Thank you in advance,

Dylan L.

The cpu supports 1600mhz ram. Intel just gives a lower speed rating to be on the safe side. Adding more ram should be fine as long as they run with the same settings.

oh really?! How would I change my Ram's settings? Dell has a locked bios on this PC so I can't access the over/underclocking settings or anything like that. It will only let me see my settings, enable/disable sata ports on bootup, allow intel rapid and choose which devices have highest startup priority. Is there any bios download or something I can do to change this? Sorry, I'm new to bios configs and Ram. I understand Ram perfectly with the speeds and stuff, I just don't know how to modify their settings.

Thank you for the fast reply.

It seems your motherboard doesn't support that speed then.

I just checked my bios and it says the 16GB kit is in fact running at 1066MHz. So would I be able to use the ram?

Ram isn't inherently any speed. The kits they are sold in are just guaranteed to work at advertised speeds in their configurations.

Any faster ram you get would just match the slower sticks.

Okay. So if I was to run the 2x8GB sticks alongside the 3x2GB sticks would that cause any problems? Otherwise, apple is buggered with their 12GB Mac Pro :")

It will probably work but no guarantees.

Might give it a shot then. Any chance that it might corrupt my 8GB sticks? If so how much chance. They don't come cheap out in Aus, mind you nothing does.

It shouldn't. If something goes wrong, the system will probably just provide an error code.
