Crossfire a 280 and 280x (both gigabyte windforce)

I bought a 280 then ended up also getting a 280x for cheap used and I never got around to returning the 280, I have heard mixed information on support of crossfire

 

Both cards are Gigabyte Windforce 

 

if anyone got it to work without driver crashes I would appreciate the help

Yes, you can put them in cf but the 280x will slowed to match the 280.

Plug them in connect the crossfire bridge download the latest CCC and enable crossfire in CCC. should be that easy. Just remember some games don't officially support Crossfire or SLI like BF4.

Never really understood how CFX worked, but is it possible to overclock the 280 to match the 280X at stock and keep the speed?

It's possible--both cards are in sync when you oc though so you'd just be oc'ing the two in unison.

How would it work in SLI's case? Same thing? I was planning to grab another GTX 970 but reference cooler. Would the Reference one clock my superclocked one down? Is it possible for me to overclock the reference card to match the superclocked speed to maximize performance?

Yes, the SC card would slow down to match the slower card and you can adjust the clocks for both cards.
