I am still only an intermediate at all this building and stuff, built a budget computer for a friend, built my own computer.

But I was wondering if say I built a computer for someone with an AMD Athlon 760k, where would I upgrade it to say 2-3 years down the line that isn't an APU?

Never really liked the idea of APUs to be honest, too much to consider and learn.

the athlon are CPUs, they are the same as the a10 but with no graphics in the die.

You missed the point of this thread..

Where would the next point in the upgrade path be for an athlon build?

If the build Will be upgraded in the future, The FM2/fm2+ socket is worthless for a gaming build according to me.

It is better to go with a AM3+ motherboard and putting a FX 4300 in it, They have similar performance And it can be upgraded towards the 6300 and 8320 pretty easily.

My Gaming PC

|| CPU: Intel i5 4690@4.3Ghz || GPU: Dual ASUS gtx 1080 Strix. || RAM: 16gb (4x4gb) Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600Mhz. || Motherboard: MSI Z97S Krait edition. || OS: Win10 Pro

nowhere, the best cpu for fm2+ is the 860k, and that is still a budget and weack CPU, want my opinion??

get an h81 or b85 or even h97 board, a Pentium G3258 (it outperforms that very athlon 760k in gaming) and overclock the literal shit out of it, and you get comparable performance with dat intel upgrade line

Pentium G3258 is going out of date soon in my opinion. More games are not supporting dual cores and dual cores suck in my opinion.

The pentium G3258 is a better choice than going with a athlon 760k/860k according to me though, It is a easier upgrade towards higher end CPU's.

But i agree on that Dual Core CPU's are nearing the end.

I would much prefer building a computer with an FX 4300 then upgrading to FX 6300 or FX 8320/8350.

the fx line is dead, and amd isnt making new CPUs till 2015, and in gaming a locked i5 4440 is much better than an fx 8 core

It depends on how heavily threaded games will be in the future.

It is pretty dead, Yes. But it still has a little life left.

The 8320/8350 is AMD's best cpu's right now, They are weak for higher end CPU's but they are decent at mid.

In the end it comes down to what performance the person wants and if the person prefer amd or intel.

Also get a 1000 watt PSU (Even if you don't need it); eventually you'll want a stronger gfx card, maybe two; and you won't have to buy a new PSU.

1000 watt psu is even WAY to much for 2 way sli. even for 3 way its overkill

my rig : Intel Xeon 1246-v3 , asus z97 sabertooth mark 1 , 16gb hyperx fury , 1tb wd black , 240gb hyperx 3k ssd , corsair 650w RM psu , hyper 212 evo , gtx 970 ,

Well, there is supposed to be carizo which should have a new athlon line with it, although its only a rumor if it is staying on the fm2/fm2+ socket. And should carizo not have an athlon line, the new apus will use HSA to great advantage, allowing for hopefully better architecture but not really upgrading the chip that much.

I would just go with and i3 / h series board, at least until we know wether or not Carrizo will actually be a viable upgrade option, it allows you to upgrade all the way to a locked i7, but if you really really must go amd, 860k all the way.

fx 6300 - sapphire dual x r9 270x - Zalman z9 - Evga 500B - Cooler master hyper TX3 - Win. 8.1 - Asrock 970 extreme 3 r2.0 - Crucial ballstix sport 8gb (2x4) - WD blue 1TB - some random optical drive for 11$

Kind of pointless to not just get a 6300/8320 from the get-go since they can be found for pretty cheap and aren't that much more expensive.

This belongs in the CPU, Motherboards, and Memory section. I'm moving the thread.
Please post in the correct sub-forum in the future--do not just dump your threads into General Discussion.

That's silly. Graphics cards are moving towards better power efficiency. Depending on the upgrade path, a decent ~550w is plenty for any single gpu system.
