A long time power user that took a back seat to performance computers. Dating back to 386 days!

Long story short back in 2006 I said I would take a back seat to building and just order a dell xps.

Well it has served me well for encoding, rendering after effects shots although it takes a bit, bit torrent and WoW with graphics cards being updated here and there but the Core2Duo has seen better times as of late. Crysis giggles at it when I have much of anything going on in the background and Metro crawls along.

So I started researching. Found the Linus tech tips vids on YouTube and rejoiced!

I have already grabbed a lot of parts from various spots thanks to pcpartpicker.com

Current list is as of now.

Asus Sabertooth x87

Haswell 4770k

16gb Corsair vengeance ram 1600mhz

Corsair H80 closed loop cooler

Corsair TX650 power supply

From the current system I am going to grab the optical burner and current drives which are sata and from what I have read will work just fine on the Sabertooth. Case I am leaning towards a fractal design R4. Video card I have in the dell is a Evga 570 and will be transferring it over while I recap some money to upgrade. Would like a SSD but clueless what brand to go for as there are so many out there. Total left for the build is right at 400 dollars US and there is a micro center down the road. (main reason I got the 4770k is that $290 price tag.)

I appreciate all the help in advance.

You can never go wrong with Samsung SSDs, get atleast 120/128 gigs.

If you want performance get a Samsung 840 Pro, but if you want storage get a Samsung 840, they are both really high performing but the 840 isn't quite as good but it is a good bit cheaper. Also the R4 is a great case and it is really easy to build in.

Thanks for the input.

Question on the Samsung pro. Looking at the 240gb area is the samsung able to have a portion set aside to cache a hdd as do a little after effects rendering from time to time? I had heard the Intels can but haven't seen very many good reviews on them? Also any other insight on what I should also be looking at for this build.

I'm pretty sure you can just set your ssd or a partition of it as the scratch disk for rendering instead of as cache for a hard drive.

I would love to provide some more insight but first, I would like to know your budget.

I am at a 400 USD budget with the operating system still to be purchased.

Ahh, I didn't think you bought the list of parts already.

Here you go: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CPGm

It seems like you already have things figured out. You could get the 840 Pro instead but that would be cutting quite close to your budget without too much improvement. If you could get it for cheaper, go for it though.
