Dear LTT,

I will be receiving my ATH-M50X's relatively soon and was wondering if I will need any amplification? I am planning on using these as headphones for music/gaming (with a modmic) on my phone/laptop/PC. The phone is a Galaxy Note 4 (and occasionally my One M8) if that makes a difference. Would it improve performance or would it be a waste of money? In-line or desktop amp?

Thanks for all of your help,

Eric

Lolno

ath m50x don't need an amp but they can benefit from one, you can always buy one later as its not necessary to have one

The M50Xs already do a great job without much amplification, most motherboards pack enough hardware to make this headphones sound great. He will be just fine even with the iphone, but if you get some aftermarket amp or amp+dac you will maybe get a stronger louder sound that can end up clearing the final output a bit.

Tell him to try the headphones for himself, and if he thinks he can use a bit more punch or if he notices a muddy sound; upgrade.

I use my M50X's with my One M8 no problem. Planning on getting an O2+ODAC soon, so I'll be interested to hear the difference

Its not how an amplifier or headphones work, unless you have been living on headfi, at which point carry, on you are correct.

How exactly would an amp/dac  help me, then? I may be interested in an affordable solution for my desktop, or perhaps an in-line for my phone/laptop? The laptop is a Razer Blade 2014 so I think it should be able to completely drive it on its own.

It wouldn't, with your current headphones.
